My bushcraft tool set is constantly evolving the more that I learn and the more trips that I take. This is what I brought my most recent outing...

Notice something? No ESEE's?!?! Why JGON, you ask? Well, I do try to give some other makers a chance once in a while (and just so you know, I'm not a complete idiot, and I did have an Izula around my neck when taking that photo). And sure enough, after using these tools on a couple of trips to try some different makers out there, I ended up with a Bark River knife that had several chips and rolls in it...

Never again...

I currently own a Junglas and an Izula (biggest and smallest), and I just ordered an RC-4 to cover the middle ground for me now, and I am guessing that will become my go to bushcraft knife.

One day I may like to get a Fiddleback, and I may at some point pick up a Becker to see what all the fuss is about, but until then I can't wait to get my 4 and strip the coating so it will fit in very nice with these two beauties...

Pics next week!

same here, i like to play with other knives first hand rather than relying on others' reviews solely. i was eye'ng the fiddleback and the jk knives as well but decided to go with a blind horse knives bushcrafter since i can get it now as opposed to a custom order.

JGON, I bet Jeff is glad to see the G-14 classfied addiction formula is still working long & hard in that Junglas handle . . . :)
Be sure and take some shots when that bad boy gets to you, hope you enjoy it. . . Merry Christmas & thanks for all your reviews.
Be safe.

Thanks man. And you know there will be plenty of pics of the 4 in action when it arrives...

The general philosophy behind my tools will change less than the tools themselves. Once I get the four I will have the base. I may incorporate a custom bushcraft knife and a larger axe in there at some point, but I feel very good about that lineup once the 4 comes.

Thanks all,

JGON

You're a good man for ordering another ESEE! We appreciate it.

Jgon,

The 4 Is a superb knife. With it and an Izula (I or II) you are G2G. All you need then is a chopper, and that of course will depend on local flora and fauna and taste. Get Dale's Scales, I strongly recommend them. They're just plain well designed.

God bless,
Adam

I have an ESEE 4 and a BRKT STS-3. They are two completly different knives. The STS-3 is not sold as a bushcraft knife. To my understanding, it is a companion to the STS-5, and although sold for military use, I think the edge is too thin for real hard use.
I do like both knives, and carry the STS-3 quite often as an EDC.
Maybe it's just me, but the STS-3 is a trade off knife. It's the best cutter I have, but also one of the thinnest edged knives I have. So, I don't use it hard, nor do I expect it to baton, chop, or pry.
The ESEE 4, well we all know that it can handle many more tasks.

foxx is right. The BRKT STS-3 is not a good wood knife and it's not designed as such. I wouldn't give up on BRKT based on that alone. I've owned over 30 Barkies and haven't had one problem. If you want a Barkie knife that good in the woods, I would go with the Aurora, Canadian Special, Northstar or Fox River. All good Bushcraft knives with good grinds and edges made to hold up in wood chores.

Anyway, the ESEE-4 is an excellent all rounder knife and one I would recommend to any looking for a ESEE knife for woodcraft and all around camp chores. Looking forward to any pics and videos of your new ESEE-4. ( I love your video on the Silky saw, btw.)
