As many of you know by now, I've been battling cancer and have been having a rough go of it lately. I've been sharing my progress with many here as I find the members here genuinely caring and very supportive. Hard to find these days, but not so difficult here. I spent much of last week and the full week before in the hospital because of difficulties with my response to the chemotherapy. I've done a couple giveaway's and gifted a couple more knives to members here, but this time I was on the receiving end. Something I'm not used to.
Upon my exit from my hospital stay, I happened to see a knife on the Exchange here. My wife saw me looking and asked if I wanted to buy it. Of course she threw in the pre-requisite of; "Do you really need another knife?" :D Our member sugarleaf, aka Al was selling a 2011 BF #85 EO Jack and I instantly felt the tug of; I really like that knife! I contacted Al and asked if he would be willing to hold it for the night while I sell a couple knives to build the funds in my PayPal account. He graciously agreed (thank you Al), so I posted up a few knives.
While this was going on, Thales2015; aka David noticed my interest in the 2011 BF knife as well as my sales and connected the dots that I was probably selling some to buy the other. He PM'd me and stated that he wanted to buy that knife for me because he was following my health progress and was also touched by my wife's support of bringing me a knife or two daily on her visits to the hospital to cheer me up. I explained that I just didn't feel right accepting. His response was that it was too late. No thank you wasn't an option and that it was a done deal.
Wow! was all I could say to myself. David left me speechless and here it is several days later. I received the knife and instantly felt a connection, but still speechless. Only now am I able to gather some thoughts about such a wonderful gesture. David has shown his generosity here many times. But then again, I see this type of thing here almost daily between members. All truly caring for one another. Many of whom have never met and probably never will. But it just shows that a Forum where everyone shows much respect for one another can create an online family. My wife didn't really "get it" before, but she now realizes that it is more than true. A couple of times now, she has shed a tear or two when she has seen the acts of caring by many of the members here. I often read here some of the goings on.
I just want to say thank you to all for your caring and support and a very big THANK YOU DAVID. this knife means so much to me now.
The fight goes on!!

Bob, glad to know that you're keeping your chin up. My heart is full learning of David's generosity. It makes life that much easier knowing we still have great people like this among us.

Bob, I'm glad that you are on the road up, and I wish you a speedy recovery. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball, but we have to do the best we can. A few years back I had a little problem, and I found this forum a refuge to take my mind off of things. This is a collection of the best of the best of human beings, and is without a doubt the best place on the 'net. I feel certain that it is impossible to find a better group of people than we have here. It truly is an online family.

Keep looking up and keep on fighting. I wish you the best, and congratulations on the new knife. It's a beauty.:thumbup:

Fantastic stuff! :) Well done David, what a kind and generous act to a well-deserving fellow member

Bob, I was the recipient of the same knife a couple of years ago from Duncan in NZ, it was my first GEC, and his favourite knife. I treasure it greatly :)

I agree with every word of what Carl says

This is certainly the best place on the net, and I don't think you will find a finer group of people anywhere. I have to say that my chin has been on the floor all afternoon after being the recipient of yet another act of generosity from a good friend here :)

I'm glad your feeling better Bob! Never quit.....!!! Surrender is never an option!

David, damn fine act of true kindness sir! My hats off too you:) if more people were like you, the world would be a better place!

God Bless to all,

Ryan

Wow this corner of the forum truly has some of the finest people on earth that gather here. :) I wish you the best of luck with your fight Bob and you will be in my prayers. Thank you for sharing this and congrats on the knife! It's a beauty for sure.

Good to hear this Bob, decency never becomes extinct here!

The 2011 Forum Knife is a very fine item, I've always liked mine and was GEC's first contribution. They managed to put out a relatively rare pattern the Candle Tip/Teardrop which nobody else had been offering for a while, it also ushered in their interesting 85 range of knives. The other thing is, this knife has a bottle opener so whenever you fancy a 'soft' or a 'hard' drink to quench your thirst it comes in handy:D:D

Good health to you Bob!

Thanks, Will

Bob, as the recipient of your generosity all I can say is I hope you get well soon, sorry to hear you have been having a tough time of it, and this extremely generous gift from David couldn't have gone to a more deserving person. David, I am speechless, what a fantastic gift. Bob, again, I hope you are better soon my friend.

Good to hear this Bob, decency never becomes extinct here!

Nor does it ever go out of style here. Bod, I'm delighted you've been discharged from the hospital and know that you are on the uptick. I hope your progress continues. I'm also happy that you had something so great to come home to--both because the knife itself is amazing, but more importantly because of the friendship and memories that it now represents. There's an archaic English word that describes David's generosity and it is a single word: lovingkindness. David, you are good people! Thanks for the great example.

Thank you all so much. It's true about this forum being family. The knife is but an extremely nice by product of the caring and generosity of this family.
You're all the best in my book.

Way to go David, it really makes me feel good reading about this!:thumbup:

BigB, keep fighting the good fight :boxing:, most of the regulars are thinking about you, myself included. Thanks for writing it up.

Great story and great knife. The great thing about this forum is how positive everybody here always is. No matter how dark the rain cloud hanging over your head is, this group will provide the silver lining. Kudos to all involved.

Bob, you're jumping right back into things with both feet!!:cool:
I REALLY like the looks of those EO teardrop jacks anyway, and you managed to snag the 2011 BF version! Congrats!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Oh, if you only knew the whole story surrounding this one. Soon, my friend. Real soon.

Thanks for sharing the "rest of the story", Bob!:thumbup:

As I've said more than once before, even though stories of this nature are quite commonplace here, I continue to be amazed at the "uncommon" thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity so prevalent in the traditional subforum. Stories like this invariably raise my spirits.

Kudos to David; I'm sure the original Thales would have approved of your magnanimity (literally, "greatness of spirit")!:D:D

Bob, I really enjoy reading about the splendid knives you pick up, but of course it's even more enjoyable to hear about improvements in your health! I'll continue to pray for you and your caregivers, and continue to be inspired by your example in the face of adversity.

Bob, you let me in a little bit about this prior to the post. I have wondered in the past as well, "will they feel funny or put off if I post a thank you" I think the very things we were taught as children apply...Please and Thank You. Respect and courtesy are abundant here and I am proud to sit among such fine folk on this porch of ours:thumbup:

Robert Fulghum is the author of one of my favorite books, simply because its so true in life "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten"

Great Thank you thread Bob:thumbup:

DAVID you my friend are very kind...I'll borrow Jack Black and Duncan's term for your extreme generosity "LEGEND". I said it before and say it again today as it so aptly applies:cool:

Good on both of you!!!

Wow Bob, That's one of the most sought after knives around these parts. What a fantastic gift. Even better than the knife is the sentiment behind the gift. Way to Go David!!!!!!!

Hang in there guy and fight the good fight. I finished up my treatment 2 years ago now and it's definitely an experience and it does change your body. But it's better than the alternative. I know a few times you start to wonder which is worse, the disease or the treatments.

Kudus on the terrific gesture and a tribute to the generous souls here on the forums.

Outstanding knife, and a outstanding gesture.

Been dealing with cancer (4th stage melanoma) since '95, also the reason for my goofy forum name. Keep up the fight.

Outstanding gentlemen. What a wonderful gift and an equally excellent thank you. Gestures such as these inure not only to the benefit of the parties involved, but to all of us lucky enough to read about them.:thumbup::thumbup:

Thank you Halfneck. Funny you mention forum names. A couple of people asked about my forum name. One person even inquired if I was linked to the Big Biscuit restaurant chain in the Midwest. :D
Mine was one of many nicknames pinned to me from high school football days from 40 years ago. I was one of the bigger members of the team. These days, with the illness and all....well not so much.
