My mail carrier just delivered a package from Glenn containing my old Schrade 708Y. He replaced the shrinking yellow celluloid handles with beautiful autumn gold bone, cleaned up the blades, and even reshaped the tip of the clip I had foolishly broken as a boy.

Here are two quick pictures. More to follow, comparison shots of the old with the new.

Doug,

That looks tremendous!

You've shared before about how much this knife means to you. I'm glad you felt confident to trust Glennbad with the work. He did your knife, and the sentiments invested therein, justice.

(I can understand the value in mementos that bear the scars of our earlier mistakes, but it can become wearying to constantly behold one's own damage. Good on ye for having the blade reshaped. ;))

Nice said, Sarah!

Doug that´s a great knife. Congratz on that beautiful knife and great emotional value that it has for you. :) Glenn did a great job; he gave her some freshup but kept it´s vintage look somehow. Great work!!

Thanks for sharing.

Now for some comparison shots. You will notice in these mark side shots that I did not ask Glenn to go to the trouble of carving the bone to include the shield. He did kindly return the shield to me as a keepsake.

You will also notice how the celluloid was starting to tarnish the blades, and the cleanup work Glenn did.

Look how much better the tip of clip blade is now!

Hey Doug, I have an old 708Y still in the original tube/box that it came in. It was my grandfather's knife, that I watched him use lots of times to cut open pecans from our tree in the back yard. He also used it to cut a plug of chewing tobacco, much to our chagrin at the time. I now have it and it is hair popping sharp, and carry it occasionally. He was one to take care of all his tools and implements. Taught me to love the outdoors, hunt, fish, and how to sharpen a knife on an old "Whet rock", that i also have to this day. It is shaped like an old canoe, but still useable.

Blessings,

Omar

Doug, thank you for trusting me with something that means so much to you. It was an honor to work on it.

Doug was EXTREMELY patient with me, as I had a few issues with this knife. I was also surprised to find a swinden construction on this knife when I took it apart...that led to a little more prep.

Thanks for nice write-up Doug, and all the nice comments, everyone!

Nice work! A new lease on life!

Nicely understood Sarah.

Doug, I love your knives and how you carry the history forward but with a new light:thumbup: It's really what these old vintage knives are about and seeing them well into the future. Your son will be a gracious benefactor some day;)

Good on you with what you do and thanks for your input/photographs and just bein a great guy here on the forum:thumbup:

Glenn, I know that if I have a trusted project in the future that you will be the one I contact. Your appreciation on ones knife and it's importance to the person are priceless:)

Very nice, great restoration. But Doug, please stick a piece of wood in the pipe hole before a knife goes ker-plop.......300

This one actually fell off while I was setting up for the first photo. Fortunately it fell down into the ivy, not into the pipe!

And let me add that Glenn was very adept at dealing with all the roadblocks along the way, not just the swinden construction. He kindly speaks of my patience with him. But his patient endurance to see this through to the end is remarkable in my estimation. Thanks again Glenn, for making something I treasured even more precious.

One more plus regarding this restoration. As I mentioned in another thread, one thing I really like about the new bone handles is how they widened the knife from its original format factor, which actually makes it more useful.
