Hey guys, just got home tonight and on my way stopped to get some food at the gas station. As I'm leaving something catches my eye, a box that says "fatwood." I turn back and sure enough a box of fatwood at the gas station convenience store. Went back in a picked up a box for $3.89, its a 2lb box but that should last me plenty long.

It's made by Duraflame and says it is from felled trees and no new trees are felled to make it. Got it at the Exxon Tiger Mart so others should carry it. This store had it near the exit along with other fire stuff such as little logs etc... just look near the fire stuff for your house or ask the guy there.
2lbs $3.89

Pieces are about 8" long and about the same thickness, but should have no problem sawing pieces to length for pocket/keychain carry or for PSK or other kit pieces. Will do some testing later or tomorrow.

Shavings light pretty easily with a flame from a lighter, but sparks from a flint such as a mag bar aren't that easy (for me atleast).

I've been playing w/ a small supply of fat wood - using it to light my outdoor fireplace. Using very fine shavings, I've yet to have a problem lighting it w/ a blastmatch. I've beenshaving fine tendrils into a quarter/half dollar sized pile, then sparking directly into it. It's taken no more than 3 attempts w/ the blast match to get it going.

I tried sawing a piece to create a small pile and couldn't get it to light

Probably in my technique :foot:

I wrapped some fatwood shavings in cotton dryer lint and struck my Hotspark, which ignited the cotton wool and it flamed right away. The combination flamed for about 60 seconds or so. I did another and placed more fatwood into the cotton and it flamed longer.

I have fortified the tow in my flint and steel kit with shavings. It holds the flame for quite a while.

Shave the stick in the direction that it doesn't split with a sharp knife and incorporate the fine shavings into the tow linen so that you get some in each "nest".

I also split off some matchstick size pieces to lay in my kit as well.
