Went out yesterday and thought I'd make another Fatwood torch using my JK Hiker. First ya need to split your main stick for about 8" down.....

Then make your second split the opposite way.....

Then just insert your Fatwood alternating direction each time.....

While I was doing this the girls played near the water.....

I then stuffed some old mans beard ino the gaps to take the spark from my ferro rod.......

I came across this, looks like I'm not the only one round here into bushcraft!

Nice pics Pitdog! Thanks for sharing, might have to give one of those torches a shot.

Wish i wasn't allergic to dogs! Everytime I look at one of your threads w/ pics it makes me want one even more but the stuffy noses and sneezing is just too much to deal with ATM.

The torch is cool. How long do they burn before "stuff" startes following off it?

Sweet pics, Pit. Nice fatwood torch -- similar concept to the log thing (don't know propoer name?) that Ray Mears used to cook that tar stuff with. (Was it tar, or did me he make tea? can't remember)

Hi I have seen a few of your posts on here and each time have thought 'I think I know that place." So I have to ask, are you in Todd inlet? Because I spent a lot of time there in my youth and it sure looks like my old stomping grounds.

I just got an idea on how to score some fatwood. Discarded Christmas trees. Would that work?

If you have access to the farm where the trees came from yes, possibly. You won't get fatwood from the trees themselves. The roots send up sap in an attempt to heal itself when the tree undergoes a violent crack. However, I'm not so sure about a clean saw cut. Seems like you get sap as a flat pan at the bottom of the cut rather than imbedding a nice longitudinal chunk of wood as it does in a natural break. Anyone experience this?
