Inspired 100% by this thread from dweglarz13: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1360494-modded-my-sebenza-25-clip-pics?highlight=25+pocket+clip , I set about making my own mod to correct what I percieve (my opinion only) as one of the biggest design mistakes CRK ever let slide. I think their decision to apply the defacto standard CRK pocket clip to the Sebenza 25 has held the model back. In my own experience the annoyance factor of the clip has kept me from ever really liking the knife as much as I might have otherwise (again, just my take on things).
I went on a rant here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1157256-25-Pocket-Clip-I-agree-with-the-haters which sums up my case against the 25 clip placement (yes there were sleepless nights, loss of appetite, and cold sweats
). I also feel CRK is somewhat aware of this issue, hence the angled clip on the Inkosi.
So fast-forward to today. I really enjoyed Steel Addiction's post about his long term carry of his 25: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1163430-Sebenza-25-**Update**-from-Last-June-2013?p=15781843#post15781843 and noticed he was running clipless. Clearly the knife is a great knife to foster 3 years of loyalty, but what of that clip? I have tried to like the 25 clipless, but the knife seems not to sit nice loose in my pocket. I want it clipped!
Taking the cue for dweglarz, I completed my own mod. I went for something asymmetric similar to Brad Southard's design on the Spyderco Southard Flipper clip. I sawed off the end with a dremel cut-off wheel, and refined the edge with the flat of the cut-off wheel and a Dremel fine rubberized stone wheel, then did some final touch ups with a loaded strop.
Things to know about the result of this mod:
1 - Be warned!! The original CRK pocket clip is absolutely perfect - this mod does nothing to improve the clip, it just makes the knife better in hand (which to me is more important - YMMV).
2 - Although the modded clip is arguably more "pokey", it is pokey in a place where there is nothing to poke.
3 - A very steep tip angle is required for the modded clip to still slip over the thick double-crease of some jeans. If you bend the clip tip to where it 'looks right', it will catch on jeans, you must bend it more. It really needs a fairly steep angle if you want to use it one-handed, with jeans.
4 - It helps to take some overall spring-tension out of the clip, so it is easier for it to slip over the lip of the pocket
5 - Start by removing just a little material and testing. You can always cut off more, but can't go the other way. Be patient and prototype.
6 - If you do this mod, and hate it, you can always buy a new clip for $15
Here are some pics of the finished product:
The picture below shows the clip "BEFORE" mods (note clip digs into middle finger).
This picture shows the clip "AFTER" mods (note new 'pokey' clip is clear of both fingers).
Thanks for the read, and by all means you are welcome to completely disagree. I wish CRK offered the 25 with a shorty clip, but I suppose this detail will be corrected with the large Inkosi, which I imagine will have an angled clip like the small.
My hand is now in 25 heaven........Ahhhhhhhh.......the ergos finally make sense!:thumbup:
