What would the purpose of this blade shape be? Self defense?

Correct, it's mainly a self defense design because it's not good for much else!

Nice blade bud although you state self defence recurve/inside curve blades depending on steel I find can be good for feather sticks , shavings carvings etc.... But this would work well similarly to the style of ma that karbits are used for.
Wrist swipes , releasing from grips etc what are your costs for something like this if I may ask thanks.

Edit: I think a sharp top side would work well due to the depth of curve on the inside.

I do a lot of recurves because I find them functional for the reasons you stated. I was partly joking when I said the blade had no other use, it would be a good little working blade if you didn't mind the lack of a belly. This one went for $230.00 as pictured.
