Another Firelighting tool for the kit !

Looks like it would be difficult to pack, but it's a nifty concept...harder to use than a fresnel though.

Been around for years. Radio Shack used to sell them. I have one somewhere. More usefull in Arizona than in Ohio. But I did get it to work --

after I took the antiscratch cover off.

i will stick with my ferro rods, sparklight, peanut and zippos and my bics.....they work the best for me.

neat concept though.

Nice concept but some fatwood and a firesteel will suit me just fine. ;)

Radio Shack did sell them years ago. If you want one even more powerful that just costs a couple bucks and you can get it today, go to Wal-Mart and in the cosmetics section they have one that is a magnifying mirror, about 6 - 10X and it will really light stuff up! The fact that it is magnified makes it much better for these uses but the fact that it is apparently glass would make it more fragile than highly polished stainless steel. My brother polishes the bottoms of soda can alcohol stoves so they can be used for this as well.

Marty Simon likes to use one to light a cigarette as a practical demo that it does indeed work (I have witnessed), but that you need a parabolic form to achieve the focal point to the beam.

Hence, flat surface mirrors for signaling - not fire lighting.

Can't recall if RM used one, but wouldn't be surprised.

There was another thread (not long ago) about this tool. They are available at Going Gear and he even has a video showing assembly and operation. Looks like a cool toy for sunny days but I wonder how it would work in less than optimal conditions.

Yeah, I've heard the soda can thing. I've never tried it before but I imagine it is the same concept. Great, more crap to pack into my already stuffed/heavy load out.

Les Stroud showed how to do this on one episode of his show. He just used a little bit of chocolate to polish the bottom of the can, if I recall correctly.
