Another Firesteel Rig

Someone on this forum came up with the original idea for gluing a firesteel to a container and this is my latest take on it. I rigged one up a while back with a spy capsule, but this one is cheap, easy, and has a lot of capacity.

I took a Coghlan's match case and used JB Weld to glue an eBay firesteel to the side, with a chunk of haksaw blade, for a total cost of about $4. You could make a truckload in an evening. It leaves a ton of room for tinder and the striker and of course you could put a few matches in there too. One thing I like is you can really get a grip on this one.

cool, do you know that they even manufacture those blaze orange math cases with a flint in the side but they never seem to work, the flint is always too small and when you manage to hit it with the hacksaw blade, you make a large scar in the side.

That is a very cool idea, if you could get a long spy capsule that would be very cool. Your vaseline cotton and striker all in one package. Chris

There's one about the size of a lighter flint on the bottom of the case in the photo. Nearly useless, IMHO.

What size of ferro rod is that? I've got some JB Weld just sitting around....

Great idea!

I've thought about doing this to the edge of a kydex sheath. Place the rod until it's down at the tip. It would have to be a sheath with a Tekloc or something so it was easily removable.

The one in the photo is 1/4" diameter.

My next trick is to find a hardware fitting that can be glued to the cap (or bottom) so you can get it tied down. I'm sure a small eye bolt with some washers and a little silicone sealer or the JB Weld to prevent leaks. Something like a tiny pad eye would be cool so you wouldn't need to drill and seal the cap.

Tonight I got around to try loading tinder and matches in the case. I got 8 strike-anywhere matches, one joke birthday candle (the kind you can't blow out), and 8 Tinder Quick tabs in there along with the hacksaw blade. I cut the hacksaw blade as long as I could, bit it was a pain trying to pull it out with the other stuff in the case. I put a safety pin through the eye of the hacksaw blade and that made a trick little sliding toggle to pull it out. A short piece of light line or floss would do the same.

Here's my next stage of evolution on the matchcase with a firesteel. I had my K&M match case sitting on the bench next to the matchcase with the firesteel epoxied to the side and the idea light went on. I had some Brunton compass capsules and just epoxied one to the lid. Voila!

I've already got my lil compass glued on mine, I'm gonna put a flint on for sure though.

Cool idea!. I have the same setup except for I glued a strip of match striker to the side and another bit inside the cap. Submerged the lot and it still worked....I think it might not if submerged for too long though....
