Hello everyone!

I happened to run across this forum a few weeks ago while lookin for some info on a knife.
It's exciting to run into a bunch of knowledgeable people who obviously take their hobby very seriously. I am new to the world of quality knives but have been a knife lover for a couple decades now. So far just reading your posts has tought me much,
and i'm lookin' foward to moving into the addiction of knifedom.

Hmmm,,, last month if someone told me I'd pay a thousand bucks for a pocket knife, I'd say, HUH!!??!! now.. I probably would... (except my wife would kill me with it! hehe)
Anyway good to meet ya

Tony

Welcome to the world of having more knives in your pockets than $$!!

How much for the FNG?

I hear that they are a little dull to start with, but can sharpen up real quick with a lot of hard work.... Some of the very early models are now even somewhat collectable: See Definition under "Moderators".

Welcome Thach!

It's great to see a FNG take the time to read a little before posting away without thinking and asking brilliant questions like 'do any of you actually carry knives?' or 'What is the Best knife for opening car doors or escaping from burning airplanes?'.

Don't be in such a hurry to pay $1000 for a knife. I've been seriously collecting custom knives for 5 years and I have yet to spend that much money

Enjoy the forums! Ask good questions and you will get great answers. Ask dumb questions and you will get 'interesting' answers. Ignore the idiots.

Paracelsus, idiot

Thanks Paracelsus,,

Before I drop the $$ I'll be sure to check for advice here anyway,,, so as not to get the raw deals,
Been there done that, Don't wish to get screwed again,, it hurts

Jimmy, some FNG's get a raw deal here too.

A little thought before you post can go a long way towards achieving one's goal and avoiding misery.

You obviously figured that out already

Now learn to use the $%&*(&* search function and we will get along fine.

Thatch- welcome aboard.
You'll learn to ignore a good portion of what you read here & to pay very, very close attention to the rest. Finding out the difference is the hard part.
Our esteemed moderator, Paracelsus, for example is named for a guy who used to advocate Mercury as a cure for Syphilis, there's a guy named Vampire Gerbil who is... well... Vampire Gerbil, and there are the rest who you'll get to know- but they won't steer you wrong when it comes to all things "knifey".
enjoy.

Jimmy Thach - I too am new around here. My background is more towards firearms, but lately I have been feeling the call towards some more knife knowlege. I have learned a good bit in the few weeks I have been lurking.

Hey don't worry about money. Find the knives you want then buy them. It is the only way you will be happy now that the bug has got you. That is something I can tell you from first hand experience.
Merry Christmas and welcome aboard.

Problem is Keith,,, So many awesome knives,, far to few credit cards!!!

My first purchase, an EKI production cqc7 about 3 weeks ago was money well spent as far as I was concerned. Next I think I may look into the Microtech line, just need to figure out my price range, then add about 50 to 100 bucks for the one I'll REALLY want!

Welcome to the list, FNGs! And ignore Para. If you want to spend $1000, I'll keep you company on the top shelf!

Welcome aboard, FNG. Sometimes we old guys, especially Paracelsus, get somewhat cranky and cynical, but don't let it faze you.

I, in particular, LOVE such questions as 'what to peel an avocado with?' Or, 'is CPM420V REALLY better than 420?' Or, one of my perrenial favorites, 'what's a good knife for under x amount of money?'

Now that I have that out of my system, let me give you a few tips: First, the 'Search' function is terrific. You can often find a dozen or so posts on a topic that a newbie has freshly posted.

Second, at the front of BFC, there is a button which will take you to 'links.' Here you will find every knife maker, dealer, distributor; in short, everyone in the biz. Also on this page is a 'knowledge base' this contains excellent material on a variety of topics, such as steel selection, blade geometry, multi tools, knife sharpening, etc. Perhaps half of all the threads posted could be answered here, if the poster would only look here first. You know the phrase 'RTFM'? Well, THIS is where the manual is.

Just one more piece of advice, never mention Mad Dog knives in a post, unless it is your wish to stir up a lot of controversy and contention. Huh? What is that? You don't KNOW what a Mad Dog knive is? Well, here is a pic of some

Oh, and P.S., don't be a bandwidth hog and post unnecessary pictures.

Jimmy welcome to the Forums.
I'd like to know what knives you have now, and what type of knives do you like?
$1000 for a knife is a lot for most of us and a drop in the bucket for others. The good thing is if it's a quality knife or a quality knife maker chances are someone here will have first hand info on them. As far as makers go some of the best in the world post here and some others are lurkers, so watch what you post.
Folks have mentioned the links and search features, I would also like to suggest that you make yourself familiar with the other Forums besides just General, in the begining there is a bunch you can learn from just reading them. Later you can decide which are your favorites.
I hope you like it here, have fun and buy smart.

Welcome to BFC Jimmy!!!!!

It's nice to see that you took you're time, lurked, and got the feeling of what is going on around here before jumping in and posting every thought that's in your head.

Take the above advice, from my esteem fellow forumites, and use the search for the common type of topics.
Most questions have already been posted and discussed at great lengths.
However, don't be shy. Ask away. There are alot of great people here with alot of knife knowledge.
Use 'em!!!
They love it!!!!!

Welcome aboard, Tony. My only advice is to ignore Walt. The rest of us do

Wow! thanks for all the replies,, Walt thanks for the info, I'm gonna check that stuff out next.
And no, I'm not really ready to spend a grand yet,, I just understand now, how that kind of value can be placed on a "pocket knife". ( I used to see a Buck 110 at Meijers for 40 bux and go, Dam if I spent THAT much for a knife I'd never take it out of the box!!! Now I carry a 90 dollar knife with me everywhere I go...

Anyway I not totally new to knifes, I have about a dozen or so,, mostly fixed blades, mostly military, I like Gi JoEs

Thanks for the warm welcome,, Merry Christmas to Y'all.
