Ricky was in my English 119 class last semester. Just heard in the news that he barely survived a serious case of alcohol poisoning from a night of partying while pledging for a frat. Seems his blood alcohol level was 0.496 when his frat brothers took him to the hospital. Rock on!!!

He survived, as far as I know. The wiser part is debatable though.
It took me a long time too wise up about alcohol. I could'a died countless times, well maybe not countless but a good many.:o
When I was so damned drunk I couldn't lift my head I sometimes wished I wuz daid. :grumpy: ;)

What wuz always ironic was that it seemed as I always had a Double Damned good reason fer gettin that way, in the end it never solved anything.
And it always made the memories worse instead of better.:( :footinmou

I've never really seen the appeal of getting smashed for the fun of it. For me, a beer a day is usually enough (as well as being something of a health regiment). ;)

Josh I only hope your former student gets some help before he really screws his life up. Did he give any indication that he was like this when you had him?

Drinking games can be stupid, I read that some other kid won a drinking contest by drinking 50 shots, unfortunately he DIED!!

I've been without liquor for going on a year and a half. Can't say I miss it much.

Me three! About three years. I don't miss it either. I just decided to stop for awhile and haven't had anything to drink since.

Well, I guess he's OK, which is good. You can teach 'em anything and everything, but you can't make them learn.

I enjoy a drink from time to time. Heck, sometimes i enjoy 6 or 7;) (maybe once every 3 months with old friends), but you have to almost set out to destroy yourself to get alcohol poisoning. I can drink a fair amount for my size (Irish genes i suppose), but i know when to stop. I know alcohol affects people differently, but in order for me to get alcohol poisoning i'd need to drink quite a few past the "this isn't fun anymore" stage. But then again, some people are idiots.
A very good friend of mine in college used to drink himself sick just about every night. I mean barfin' sick. He said to him "drinking is like a rollercoster. You go up. You go down. Throwing up is when i know i can get off the ride." He went on to land a nice job in sales, thus more money to drink with. He got the nickname "Out of control" at work because he finally got to the point where he ruined his bodily control and kept wetting the bed.
Interesting character with a lot of demons, i suppose. Sharp as a tack, but destructive. I think he's trying to turn himself around. I really hope he makes it. He just got an even better job and has a great fiance. he's a good guy....even though he acts like a Jack@$$.

Jake you sound a lot like me.

I had a roomy in college (we called him ____ the Psycho roommate) that would get so drunk we'd get worried about him. Not as worried as the guy down the hall that liked the mushrooms, but we were concerned. He was a girl magnet though, for which he had another nickname I won't share. He'd break (real beer) bottles over his head, glassware, killed a cat or two when he was in his cups, as depressed as all hell. Then when he'd sober up, he was a great guy, when he was drunk he was a party killer.

I tend to be a binge drinker, I drink about a 12pk a month, then comes a weeks vacation or a good weekend, and it'll be a good drunk. I'm down from my prime drinking condition, so a 24pk pretty much kills me. Having a kiddo has pretty much stopped the recreational drinking. Now I just drink for my heart's sake :)

Death and destruction. The rewards of society are false or bleak, and we throw in the towel. I'm not saying that's entirely reality, but it fits a great deal.

So Josh has another soul he's personally intervened. For a moment when I started this thread I was worried it was the 'kid' who just killed the Judge in Atlanta.

Or as my granny used to say, you can lead a horse to water but you gotta be awful big and strong to drown him.

Glad he made it. I remember a particularly hairy episode with PCP and tequila myself that the good Lord must have been watching over me to get me through. That and the car wreck due to wine and 714's.

Now that I am older AND wiser I try to only drink a few beers and I avoid like the plague any substance that has an LD50 ;)

Report links many college deaths to alcohol
by CNN Producer Evan Howell (Special to the RT)

WASHINGTON -- Drinking by American college students is more widespread and destructive than previously thought, resulting in 1,400 student deaths and 70,000 cases of sexual assault each year, a study released Tuesday says.

"Most of those alcohol-related deaths were the result of motor vehicle crashes," said Dr. Ralph Hingson, professor at the Boston University School of Public Health and lead author of the report, which was supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

More than 1,100 of the deaths were among students between the ages of 18 and 24, he said. More than one-fourth of college students that age have driven in the past year while under the influence of alcohol, the study found.

heh....my father always told me you can lead a horse to water, but can't lift it's tail up and suck it up through thier ass for 'em...

Hell, I got a couple renters in my mother in law apartment like that. We brought her in cause she used to babysit for us and wound up divorced and homeless. Let her stay there a couple months for free, bought her groceries, diapers for the kids, fixed a car up for her, etc. So she could get back up on her feet. As soon as we got her back on her feet (in a rather wobbly stance) she hooks up with another dirtbag boyfriend, they both start drinking nightly, both wind up with DWI's....both wake me up at three in the morning falling and puking all over themselves....a real class act. It's like she's just looking as hard as she can for the next bad situation to dive into and then complain about. Kinda sad, cause she is a sweet natured, kind hearted person, and she's got an IQ higher than mine and my wife's put together. (The boyfriend might be good for sharkbait?)

At least my wife and I know in our hearts we did the right thing, and then were smart enough to emotionally distance ourselves from the situation. as long as they pay rent and obey the basic rules, they can stay. if they don't they are evicted. Once they do move on, we won't be bothering to send Christmas cards.
