O1 hardware and redwood lace burl scales. I've always had a liking for the Canadian belt knife, and was intrigued when I saw that Grohmann do a folding lockback version. A few emails between the maker and myself later, and the plans for a UK legal slipjoint were drawn. Thoughts? :)

Thoughts?

That is absolutely beautiful. If there was ever an example of a Canadian belt knife slip joint, this is that example.

Well done.

This kid could very easily give some well-known makers a run for their money. His work has been nothing short of gorgeous! Could I bother you to lend me his email? I'd definitely want my first custom done by him.

A lot of talent, but also a good bit of experience too (there just isn't a substitute I dont think). How long has the young gent been at it?

A small update from JM :)

[edit]
Apologies Mark, I only just noticed your reply. He's been making about 3/4 years, I believe, and this will be his... 10th slippy, I think? Maybe 11th.

His first ten knives. Quite the learning curve.

I was always fond of that pattern ever since I read about it in a book on becoming a guide. It seemed to be very useful design and I've wanted for probably 35 years, I did get to try out the belt knife, IIRC it was a model 1, in a forum pass around its since then it's been on my top 10 knives I'd like to still get.

Now that they have a slip joint folder, Grohmann has two spots on my top 10 list of wanted knives.

Thanks for the pics.

Wow, what a great looking knife! This kid has a great eye for what looks good. That redwood lace burl really makes the knife pop.

Amazing work.

That is a terrific looking knife! This young man is already quite skilled. As he get more and more experience it'll be great to see his work get even better. Wow. Like to have something like that myself.

That young man has a bright future judging by his progression to date. You got yourself a very fine looking knife there! It looks beautiful and very ergonomic. Thanks a bunch for sharing it here

STUNNING! That is a BEA-UUUU-TI-FUL folder! I have always wanted a "Canadian Belt Knife" as I too am very fond of it's design (and from most accounts) it's effectiveness as a Hunting/Woods type knife.
I am soon to receive a (Custom made) small "Canadian Belt Knife" (fixed blade) as made by Brian Efros of CO and.....I'm very excited! I mostly collect small "fixed blade knives" but, after seeing your beautiful "JM" slip joint.....I WANT one! Best of luck "DJ" with you new "JM" knife. Enjoy!

Regards,
HARDBALL

This slippie isn't actually made by Grohmann, just inspired by their lockback models :)

This is the third knife he and I have worked together on, and so far he's consistently done wonderful things with the handle materials I choose. The redwood itself has had quite the adventure; Had a friend in the States buy it for me (due to stupid ebay rules), then ship it off to Canada when I finally worked out what I wanted to do with it. I literally had no idea what I was going to do with it at the time of purchase, I just thought it was a nice piece of wood so decided to grab it. Exactly the same thing happened with the moon ebony actually.
After we had the initial design sorted and the wood was sent to him I pretty much just said for him to do what he thought would work, as I've come to trust his judgement. He's managed to embody exactly what I had in mind without us actually talking about it a huge amount. A great eye indeed :)

Thanks for all the comments, I'll make sure he sees them.

Another small update, because I asked JM to get a shot of it in natural light. In my opinion it shows the tone of the wood in a much better way :)
