A couple of quick questions. I just picked up my first GDOT in an antique shop with no box or papers for around $50 I knew that was maybe a little high but versus e-bay I at least got to hold it in my hand and there was no shipping for once. Other than that is was un used and what I would consider mint. It is a 1974 by the way. here is the questions the serial # on the bolster starts with an A what is the significance of that? and second on the back side of every blade it is marked GDOT, Just seemed a little different to me because I havent seen too many schrades that had a perticular marking and the same marking at that, on each and every blade? anyway thats why Im asking you guys know. thanks, joel

Hmmm.... My only GDOT is a Barlow. The serial number is all numbers; no letters. And only the large blade is stamped.

So I'm not much help. In fact I have a question of my own regarding these knives. What the heck does "G.D.B.I." stand for?
???

And I have a rhetorical question: Since these are "Limited Edition" anniversary knives, why is the quality sub-par to oridinary OldTimer knives? You'd think they would have put a little extra effort into these premium-priced knives...

G'Day, I have 11 G.D.O.T's and not one is sub par to ordinary Old Timers. On the contrary both large and small stockman even feature diamond engraved back springs. It might be worth repeating the reverse of the $1,000,000 note, enclosed with the G.D.O.T. Stockman: Grand Dad's Old Timer. To celebrate the 70th year of fine cutlery manufacture, Schrade Cutlery Corp proudly presents A Collector's Limited Edition.
True to tradition made as painstakingly as it would have been made many years ago with workmanship far beyond the requirements of the ordinary knife.
Grand Dad's Old Timer has blades of high carbon rust resistant steel, properly heat treated and tempered and each tested for its edge holding quality. Only a limited number of these can be made. The exclusive diamond engraved back is a "first" in the cutlery Industry so treasure your Grand Dad's Old Timer. It is truely a knife for the most descriminating collector.
Each knife has its own serial number engraved on the bolster and a permanent<?> record is kept if the enclosed registration card is returned:
I would have to say all 4 in the series are amongst my favourite knives and now some 33 years old. I checked all Serial Numbers all are straight numbers which are also printed on the card and the outer white dust cover. Hoo Roo

Larry did any of your gdot's have an 'A' in front of the serial number? and how about the gdot being marked on the back of the blades? and yes I agree the decorated back spring is rather impressive. I'd never held one of these guys in my hand so when I came across It I had to have it. joel

I have a couple more GDOTs on the way, so we'll see if that pattern can be repeated. Maybe I just got unlucky. My GDOT Barlow is fancy enough, no complaint about that, but it's not built to the same quality as 98% of my Old Timers. The small blade is well-fit, but the main blade is much too loose. I know the knife has never been used, so it must have shipped from Schrade like that.

I'll check my 'new' ones for the letter as well.

My GDOT does not have an A anywhere. Could it be a 4? My blades also have GDOT on the back and on the back of the main blade it has LTD.

Yes you are right The main blade has ltd on back and the other 2 have GDOT on them, I guess I accidentally said GDOT on the backs of all blades, sorry about that. But it definatly is not a 4 infront of the serial # here is what it reads A1836. any help?

G'Day Gradall ...Are we talking about the Large Stockman or Stockman 11 the smaller of the two?None of mine have any letters only numbers. Its a pity paperwork wasn't with yours as it would have been clearly printed another twice.. on card and white outer cover.
lrv, Could I be painful again and ask that you post that photo I sent mate? Do you wish to elaborate on productions at this stage? Hoo Roo

I believe its probablly the larger of the 2 stockmans its pretty much the exact same size as an 8OT. Ive been trying my ass off to get a picture of the serial number but Im having a heck of a time. I will keep trying to get a pic.

Here are a selection of Larry's knives and Bling.

wow nice collection- Ive only got one GDOT, I never thought I had much interest till I saw one in person and I had to have it, there sweet!! now back to the letter A out in front of my serial # does any of yours have that? and either way what does it mean? joel

Larry,
I see you're trying to corner the market on those GDOT barlows :) .
Nice collection!

Eric

Thanks Eric, 3 of the Mint Barlows are consecutive number sets as well and the 80th Grand Daddy Barlow is No.1234...just a further quirk to collecting!
Still dont know what the note is all about.....Mr.Voyles are you there? Hoo Roo

Bling is the fancy stuff that goes with the entire package.. bling bling is over the top flashy .

That help?
(I have 4 kids under 25)

Well I do admire that package and it looks like all of the fancy stuff is there. I can't wait until Larry gets into some broadband action and really starts kicking it out.
In the meantime, that reminds me of what my grand pappy used to say.....
little children are little trouble, big children are big trouble, and married children are double trouble.

Im pretty young(28), with a little kid(10 months) and Im married, does that =HUGE TROUBLE? anyway back to the A in front of my serial # larry any of yours got that? and does it mean anything?

gradall5200, I have a GDOT Large Stockman Serial #A2512 if this answers your question. I think that the AXXXX denotes that these are after runs of the Original 12,000 stated Production run and were to either fill new orders or to be replacements for lost or stolen knives. I am probably wrong, but that is my best guess. Scott

makes sense to me and its really the only answer we've come up with. thanks for the help. joel

I received two more GDOTs in the mail today, a stockman and barlow. Neither has an "A". Scott's guess is probably as good as any, at least for the time being.

I am still wondering what "G.D.B.I." stands for on the Barlow models. "Grand Dads Barlow I..."
