I left my OLD timer 80t in a dish of coca cola, damn it darkened the main blade and the backsprings right up..... is this what its doing to my insides?

Only if your insides are made of carbon-rich steel. ;)

It's like folks who used to put a penny or a nail in a Coke, sigh :( ........

It's the acidic nature of the carbonated water that reacts with the steel to oxidize it. Plain carbonated (soda) water will do it by itself.

Yes, I own Coke stock. :D

Cole works great for cleaning corroded battery terminals too. Ya don't even have to loosen the clamps. Just poor a little Coke or similar soft drink on them and they clean right up.

I never drink soda anymore, especillay cola. Loads of acid, sugar, and caffeine. Not to mention bloating when the CO2 drops out. It's like a recipe for a beer gut and dying young.

I mean, seriously, if you can use it to clean corroded battery terminals chances are it isn't good stuff to drink. Would you drink WD-40?

Now I know that my new 34OT has stainless blades (though not marked Schrade+), yesterday I left it 1 1/2 hours in coke and the springs got a smooth dark gray color, but the blades came out unchanged.

They had a show about Coke in the Discovery Channel Myth Busters, most myths are not true. Snopes has a section dedicated to Cokelore:

Good call on the Myth Busters show! I was just thinking about that as I read the battery terminal post. Wasn't that one of the myths that they disproved? Cola is no worse for you than any other carbonated beverage. It is the acid that hurts you. Its worst effect is that it leeches calcium from your bones (which is why people are developing osteoperosis at earlier ages now; people always giving there kids pop). That's a fact. I learned it in college biology.

I bought a new Opinel No. 8 carbon blade and used it to cut up a couple of peaches and the steel turned a very nice blue color.

I have to call BS on the acid in coke being bad for your stomach. Your stomach itself puts out way stronger acid than coke. How do you think a steak dissolves within hours of eating it. Your stomach has a mucus lining to protect itself from strong acid.

Interesting! I've seen a few posts on the Old Timer blades not being a carbon steel. Is Schrade now useing stainless in the OT line?

Sword and Shield, no I´m not a snopester, I just drop by once in a while to check things, specialy when someone sends some crazy story over the e-mail.

db, I´d like to see an official comment on Schrade steel, I don´t mind the stainless but also like good old 1095, I hope they don´t replace it completly and hopefully mark them right (like, if it doesn´t say stainless or Schrade+, it should be the old simple carbon).

I remember taking my little sister's felled tooth and putting it in a glass of coke overnight.
Turned the tooth brown and soft.
