I got a user GW (black micarta, double cut blade) in from 360joules recently -- after reading gunsite's tutorial on the ice razor, I thought i'd give it a try. It's not complete, I only had up to 1000 grit here tonight. But it's definitely coming along.

Here's a couple shots of the handle mod -- just slimmed it down a bit. I like the look better for sure, and I think i like the feel a little better as well...

What a fun way to spend a Saturday evening. It was either that or watch "Free Willie" with the girls. They were gracious and let me hang in the garage. :D

looks great so far. im working on a howling rat right now. its amazing the 1500 grit paper gives a semi-mirror finish. the sanding marks are still visible, but im waiting on some 2000 grit in the mail.

then the mother's or flitz, and it should be finished.

Sweet mods, Xaman!!

I wouldn't have recognized it.

:D :D

xaman,
That looks great! Nice handle shaping.

Just occurred to me.. could prolly polish up rivets using cone-shaped buffer loaded w/ polishing compound.

That looks AWESOME!!
Glad I could help.
When you take it up to 2000+ you'll like it even more!! :D

Thanks for the complients. It's fun to fool with anyway...

Yeah, I think I'll look into that

Looks great, what the heck is up with the slab on the rat you have it on though? It looks burnt or shot or something.

That's exactly what it is -- i inadvertantly shot it with my .444 Marlin (long story :o ). But it faired pretty well -- no blade damage at all, didn't even scratch the double cut finish... It only chipped a small piece of the sheep horn. I was thinking of sending it in for warranty repair???

No - Just joshing :p It's just a very sweet, rough finished piece of sheephorn from the old SR custom shop -- which i LOVE exactly the way it is. Here's a shot in a Leatherman rig:

It's the only rat i have left, all the others fell to the infi addiction. But this one get's to stay

Xaman--I, too, have been inspired by Gunsite and am about to start an Ice Warden. I really like what you did to your handles. Would you mind sharing how you went about slimming them down? Also, if you finished your knife it would great to see some pics.

I did finish it, but it's pretty beat up now... I'll try to get a pic or two tomorrow.

As far as the handles, I just used a small rotoray grinder and went very slow (dipping it in cold water every few seconds to keep the heat down.) Just remove a little here and a little there until I liked the shape.

It's easy. Just take lots of breaks. Walk away from it, then come back and look at it with fresh eyes. Otherwise it's easy to take too much away -- and you can't put it back!

It sure looks like you did a great job on that handle! This polish is impressive too!

Thanks, Xaman. Sounds like a haircut....you can always take more off, but you can't put any back. I look forward to the pics--beat up pics are even better.
