I need a small (less than 2.5") knife to carry to work. it needs to have decent steel, a sturdy blade and preferably a pocket clip.

any suggestions? thanks

BTW, it MUST be less than 2.5"

How about a Spyderco Navigator? I hear that Smoky Mtn. is closing them out for around thirty bucks or so.

I need to also recommend a Spyderco Navigator. I purchase one a few weeks ago from SMKW for $29.99. You just can't beat that price on such a great knife.

I used the CRKT Mo'Skeeter and it is a good pocket knife too.
( You can change the clip in order to carry left and right sides ).

You can find it for 25.00 dlls

Blade: Overall length: 2.75” (7.0 cm)
Cutting edge: 2.25” (5.7 cm)
Thickness: 0.10” (0.25 cm)
Steel: AUS 6M, 55-57 HRC
Handle: Closed length: 3.75” (9.5 cm)
Weight: 2.1 oz. (60 g)

thanks for the help guys. im working as a law intern w/ the us attorney's office and federal rules being what they are, my BM 771 is a "dangerous weapon."

i plan to cut whatever, mainly newspaper articles, loose threads, remove paper clips, cut tape and envelopes, etc. nothing exciting or too demanding. being an enthusiast, it must be razor sharp though.

I'll also recommend the Navigator, and a few others:

Spyderco Meerkat
Kershaw Chive (awesome little knife and super cool!)
Kershaw Scallion (it might be over 2.5", I can't remember)
Spyderco Mouse

Good luck,
Allen.

As an intern, you want to make the right impression. Having a knife clipped to your pocket might not help - especially at the US Attorney's office.

Legal or not, you really don't want to get into an argument about the merits of your knife. Save the debate for home - at work, be as discrete as possible.

So, I would suggest a nice slipjoint or a swiss army knife.

Millions of people have SAK Executive-style knives on their keychains, so, you'd be pretty safe with that.

Old fashioned slipjoints are also pretty acceptable in a public setting.

Schrade's "Old Timer" series are good, reliable knives that very reasonable ($20 or less, usually). IIRC, the steel is high carbon 1095 - and holds a decent edge. Cheap, sharp, harmless looking, and reminds a lot of people of grandpa. And, you can probably find them at your local hardware store.

If you don't go for a small slipjoint, let me make the following suggestions.

1) Don't get a speed safe knife
2) Don't get serrations
3) Don't use the pocket clip, unless it is IWB under a belt or something very discrete
4) Use scissors or a staple remover for most office tasks
5) Keep it cheap - in a legal setting, you may have to run to court, and you may have the knife confiscated or thrown away. Don't make it a major loss.

You never know how sheeple will react to a knife. Start out small and discrete.

Just my $.02

I agree with Rob. Unfortunately. (Nothing against Rob, though!) Don't make waves. You're just starting out and you're in a conservative environment. A classy-looking slipjoint is exactly what you want, if you choose to have a pocket knife at all.

i agree w/ you almost everything you both say regarding possible repercussions about a knife. however, the environment is not hostile to a truly pocketsize knife carried and used discretely. that is why im looking for a legal and subdued knife.

i currently have a Zippo brand 1.5" plain edge lockback. it is a nice knife but being small, slim and heavy it does not want to stay in a pants pocket and wont last too long. hence the need for a clip.

i carry IWB and am sensitive to 'sheeple' opinions. although it might be just as well advised to not carry and use scissors or paper clip removers, im used to having a pocketknife and feel uncomfortable w/o one. im sure most of you can relate.

thanks for the concern and suggestions.

OK, that's cool. Then I also recommend the Spyderco Navigator on close-out at SMKW (eknifeworks.com). The top of the hump over the Spyder hole tends to be a little sharp. It was scaping the back of my hand when I put it in my pocket. Thanks to a suggestion from Bladeforumer Pahl, I rounded the sharp part just a bit on a medium stone then polished it on a fine stone--problem eliminated! This may not apply if you carry it IWB. The $30 price, attractive looks, VG-10 steel, and capable performance in a small size can't be beat!

one more for the Navigator from smkw.
It's a gem of a little knife for $30!!!!!!!

After hearing where you're going to be working at, then maybe a nice little three bladed slipjoint might work out even better than the Navigator. Most people view slipjoints as nice jacknives that their Dad's and grandfathers carried. Very sheeple friendly, something to consider when you are new in the office. I also have a 770, how is it considered a deadly weapon? I bought it just because I thought it would be sheeple friendly?

I own a Navigator, Meerkat and SS Dragonfly, all in PE. I work for a state agency here in NC and I'm also more comfortable with a 2" blade at work. I highly recommend any of the abovementioned knives. As stated in earlier posts the Navigator is going for a song at SMKW. It's where I got mine.

I second the Spyderco Dragonfly suggestion.

And a CRKT small Urban Shark might be worth a look.

Have you looked at the Spyderco Kiwi?
2 3/8" VG-10 steel. No pocket clip, but that may not be all bad.
I think the Kiwi is a classy looking Spydie.
