I currently don't own any spyderco's, but the designs are growing on me and i read nothing but good reviews on them. My dilemma is i can't choose between the SPrint run Manix 2 & Sprint Run Caly 3.5. I generally carry an Alox SAK Cadet along with another larger blade (BM 551) for EDC and both of these seem to have about the same length blade.

What are the pro's & con's of each? I've been watching / reading reviews on both but no one seems to do "cut tests" or "abuse tests" on these particular knives. I don't want something flimsy, i want something that will hold to normal everday abuse (and i use abuse lightly as i try to take care of my "better" knives)

THanks in advance!

You're going to have to find a criterion other than "toughness" because you'd have to go well out of your way to break either knife in every day usage. In fact, you'd have to go well out your way to break most things in Spyderco's lineup.

As a hard use knife, I'd choose the Manix 2 over the Caly 3.5 Super Blue.

Both good knives but different ergonomics (& locks).

Which Manix 2 are you considering? The Manix 2 in M4 is very good and the steel is somewhat more corrosion resistant than Superblue steel. I posted a review of the Manix 2 M4 on this site. Not abuse, just a variety of tasks over several weeks.

The Gayle Bradley is another excellent heavy-duty folder (again, non-stainless blade).

My GB sees more use than my M4 Manix 2.

I say Gayle Bradley as well. Best buy in the production line up of any brand IMO. Great knife.

Caly3.5 is my favorite knife. But I EDC regular VG10 variant. Before you buy super blue Caly3.5 or Gayle Bradley, make sure that you are OK with carbon steel and ready maintain blade or OK with stains or rust. My friend loves his GB, for some reasons he treated like SS, no shock for me that in a month it developed rust spots. He scotch-brite it, which was OK for him.
For the first Spyderco I would advise to go for regular Caly3.5 or Para2. Both are great EDC with 3.5" blades. For shorter blade I would choose Native5

I would buy a small fixed blade like an Izula or BK14 for any abuse. But if is between those two Spydercos, I would go for any Manix2 Sprint.

Wow that's a tough one. I find I feel the need to hold caly with index finger on choil, the manix I like either way. I love the way super blue cuts but if I had to choose between my manix xhp and the caly super I would choose the xhp manix. The steels remind me alot of one another but the xhpp is stainless. They sharpen similarly and uold an edge similarly but I prefer the beeferness of the manix. Work at a stupid hayriide all night but I will post a side by side of the two in the morning for ya

Thanks for the input!!!

I ended up ordering the Sage 2 Titanium.... I really like the 3.5" blade, but seeing as i visit my dad in Iowa / Illinois i figured i had better drop back to a 3" blade which is the legal limit. I also like the stainless (S30V) blade better for an EDC.

lol!! Come to find out 5% of the sales from the Sage series goes to:

National Alzheimer's Association
Spyderco will donate approximately 5% of sales of the Sage to the National Alzheimer’s Association Denver, Colorado Chapter. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Contributions to the Alzheimer's Association provide care and support to families in Colorado coping with Alzheimer's disease as well as fund national programs and research to ultimately find a cure. Visit www.alz.org/co to learn more about how your support makes a difference

Taken from spyderco's website. That makes me feel even better about my purchase.

figured i would post pic anyway as you'll come back to this question in the future ;)

I just opened the Sage 2!!!

All i can say is "WOW"...I love the feel of the Titanium handles, The jimping feels great to the touch, The knife isn't heavy but it does carry some weight, is by far the sharpest "oob" knife i've ever owned, it opens very quickly (however it could use a drop of oil on the bushings).

All in all I think i'm going to enjoy this knife for many years to come!
