Another "help me decide on a knife" thread

I used to only carry cheap knockoff knives, justifying that if I was to lose it it was no big deal. After buying my first "quality knife" (Byrd Meadowlark) I've been amazed at it's ability to keep an edge, and the solid construction(compared to my cheap pieces of crap).

So I'd like to step up to a "real" quality knife and have narrowed it down to 2 models of the hideaway knife: the straight: http://www.hideawayknife.com/pic/yurcost.gif
and the sting:

I'll be using this knife on a farm in the summer, and under a collar at work during the rest of the year. I'm really excited about the S30V; which I am assuming should blow 8Cr13MoV out of the water for edge retention.

Any & all opinions are welcomed!

Ryan Z,

I have several HAK's, for me they are a last ditch knife, defensive use only. For around the house a single or double bladed wharencliff trapper, copperlock or a lockback whittler. For work a double bladed wharencliff trapper and a lock back spear point, with an HAK under a collar, in a watch pocket or in a belt sheath. The HAK is not an idea knife for many cutting jobs, ie..slice 20 to 30 computer boxes with an HAK and you fun meter will be pegged for life. Just my .02 cents

Welcome to BF! I know you are new, but you have posted this is the wrong place, as THIS is for CUSTOM knife discussion.
I am sure a Mod will be along to move it.

First- the answer to your question: on a farm, neither of those will provide you too much use. The hard S30V blade is less than utilitarian, and the design isn't exactly ergonomic. Both of those were designed as conealable knives, not working tools. However, the first one looks like you could get a little more behind the cut because of the nice little rest for the thumb.

Now- reccomendations (if you've looked at a bunch of nice knives from less than half the price to just under $100, then you can ignore this. This is just incase you haven't looked in to other options)...

You can get several "real quality knives" featuring VERY nice steels for less than half the price of a hideaway. A Spyderco Native in S30V at Walmart will only run you $40. That's far, far more knife, especially for the price. The Native was built with the user in mind, and will not cost you overly much. A Spyderco Delica in VG10 will cost you $45, or in ZDP-189 at about $73. A Kershaw Assisted Opening Avalanche in S30V will cost you no more than $90. There are many of others for nice prices that should provide you far more utility than the hideaway knives.

Good luck!

Hmm, I wasn't aware that I could get a knife in S30V for that cheap; I tihnk I'll have to try it out:)

If your looking for a "necker" style, look at a Buck Hartsook, nice little knife, S3OV.

That spyerco at Walmart looks nice. That may be my next folder instead of another Voyager.

Both are a straight edge, so it really depends on if you like a forward angled blade or straight blade. The HAK sounds good for edc and work, but maybe get a different knife for farm work in the summer. The finger hole design probably isn't too good for a utility knife.

I don't know why you'd want a concealable self-defense knife for farm work... For a tool, I wouldn't want a folding knife, either. I'd go with a strong fixed blade, 2 to 5 inch long.

I will second the Native from Wally ... S30V blade and back lock, light and pratical, a lot of Wallys can't keep them in stock. Check out the crazy thread on putting a "zip-tie" in the spydie-hole and making it wavable ... :)
