Guys,
Starting to really add some knifes to my just started collection. Since this is the only place I venture on bladeforums, I'll ask here. (Sometimes I'm embarrassed by my lack of knowledge and you guys here always treat me right). What products do you use to clean knives and then protect them? Some of the ones that have some brass have turned the greenish color on me and I need to clean them up. I've been told not to use Brasso but not sure if that's right or not. I suppose I could buy everything on the market and see what works best but I was interested in what you guys use. I've purchased several display cases for the knives but shouldn't I use something to protect them? There are all kinds of products out there and with the money I'm spending on knives, I'd like to see them well cared for so I can pass em on to my kids. Thanks in advance.

D&B, Brasso is quite agressive. This "Bluemagic" is better IMO, and leaves a silicone film to protect. If there is lots of green "verdigris" leave the cream on it for several minutes before you rub it, just don't let it dry out. After cleaning and polishing, I oil the joints very lightly. Have fun!

Thank you Waynorth. I've increased my knife collection but some of them are a little tarnished and need some work. Blades are fine with no rust at all but the brass and some of the insignia are tarnished.

Thanks Kenny. And where can I buy one of those masks on your avatar? The spousal unit is already griping about knives coming in the mail! :o

I had been looking around for blue magic and had no luck finding it but a local hardware store carried some stuff up by the register called flitz polish, and I think its probablly the best stuff Ive used yet. There was a lot of green (verdigris) and it removed it almost effortlessly and it took very little and its supposed to be safe for all types of metal, plastic, fiberglass, everything. just thought I'd share.

Hey Joel,
I now use either/or of Blue Magic and Flitz. I picked up tubes of the Flitz this weekend for $1 a tube. Both do an excellent job. I picked up the Blue Magic at an Auto Zone store.

I wouldn't polish or use anything abransive on a collectible knife. You'll risk rubbing away the patina and losing the object's historical interest, especially on a carbon-steel blade. I generally clean only with a mild detergent, like dish soap, let air dry, then add a light layer of oil or silicone for a protective coat.

Not sure how to remove the green stuff if it's very heavy. Just leave it I suppose...
