Stockdog,
I once had a great BrittanySpaniel who was one of those 'once in a lifetime dogs' a few guys stumble on to. I was into reading all things bird shooting and living the part , and never once actually read where the bird hook was being used. But it was a cutlery carry over from across the Atlantic so I was figuring it was a genteel way of pulling out 'guts' when cleaning birds brought to bag. I have tried it a couple of times but being more 'Survivorman' than 'Genteel' I just went back to my finger. The most effective way I used it, was to reach in the cut opening of the belly, stick in the gut hook, give a couple of twists and pull something out. I could see a nattily dressed(tie?) New England woodcock hunter using one, but not so much the brown coated and denim panted midwest pheasant and Bobwhite hunter.....I did wear an LLBean hunting coat so maybe I was an apprentice 'genteel' bird shooter......Long story short, dog got old, clean farming increased, birds got thin and I just knew I could never replace him. Sold 20 gauge, burned coat, hat and whistle when I cremated dogs remains. Kept bird knife.
