My third Hollow Handle Knife. What do you guys think of this one? I dropped the edge, lowered the tip a little and shortened the clip a little also. It is flat ground with a convex edge. The blade is 7 1/4" x 1/4" 5160 steel. Thanks.

Just blows me away everyone of those, very strong solid looking knife. Who ever you made that for should be a happy owner my quess :D

For what this knife is intended for I would go with the top one first (like a bit larger knife for survival since shelter and food procurement are high on the list). My second choice, which is a close second, would be the middle one. Just fond of that blade shape as well. Would love to get my hands on one of these someday. They look great.

Are you doing sheaths for them? If so, kydex, synthetic, or leather? I can see them with synthetic sheath with a pouch on the front.

Later,

Charles

They are all very cool Ray
but my favorite is the 3rd one for the reasons Charles stated.. I think thats the one in your first post.

I just hope I'm looking when you post more for sale:D

Charles, actually the bottom knife has the largest blade (1/8" longer and wider). In the picture it looks like the top one is bigger for some reason. I'm not making sheaths for these. I'm telling my buyers to get a Spec Ops Brand sheath which I think will be better than any leather one I can make for this type of knife.

Of the three knives I like the first one from the bottom due to the blade grind line plus the fact that it is the biggest of them.

Ray, thank you for providing me with the link about the assembly of such a knife. Do they all come with a compass in the butt of the handle? Have you tried it for some really hard work, such as batoning and chopping? I am also interested to know about the way the handle feels when this knife is put to its paces. BTW, what is the outer diameter of the handle?

Thanks everyone for the comments. I was wondering which one you guys like better as far as the blade shapes..

I'd like to see the bottom one, with about the same amount of steel in the blade, but a bit narrower and longer, if that makes sense. I tend to prefer less belly, as well, but maybe that's just me.

No doubt about it, you're definitely making the best of a challenging and much-maligned form. My hat is off to you once again!

g moutafis; I sold this one for $210 without a sheath. Here's a thread with pics of a similar one I did that shows the knife before assembly. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446975

Ray , I have loved the concept of a hollow handled survival knife since hearing about it and like many of us did , I bought one thinking it was going to be the beesknees , only to find out it was not all it was cracked up to be as far as strength :D So that alone has sort of pushed aside the idea.
So I am curious as to how strong you think those are ? I mean if there was a weak spot on the knife where would it be , if at all ? Ort do you think the blade to handle connection warrants no worry in these knives case ?
Hope that made sense.
That said , those are BadAss looking ! They look tankish , I think the thick , beefy guard helps to that appearance.
Are the handles steel or aluminum ? Pardom me if you posted that and I did not see it.
I would choose the middle blade I think , although I would want a little more of a point to it , making it as much of an effective stabber as it could be a slasher or chopper as well.
Hope that made sense :D

These are not as strong as if I would have made them with a full tang or one piece like Cris Reeve knives. However, I think they're still pretty strong so that you can use them without worry. The weak point would be in the joint between the guard and the handle. At this point the tang is about 7/16 wide and 1/4 thick. It is tempered quite soft so it would be pretty hard to break. Also, I shose to use 5160 steel for it's toughness and being that I can selectively temper it. A lot of knives like this are made of stainless steel. The cheap "Rambo" ones I think are made of 420J2 which would not be as strong.

g moutafis; I haven't done any destructive testing on these but I have tried chopping and battoning 2x4's. With the handle being round and steel, it is not as comfortable as a traditional contoured handle but it didn't really bother me as I'm not very picky. The diameter of the handles is 1 1/8" and they all come with a compass.

I hope I answered everyone's questions.

Ray I am not sure where I fall in line on the waiting list you started but I personally love the top knife. There is just something about that design, it really appeals to my inner RAMBO!!!:D Man I can't wait till it is my turn to get one of these!!! Great job!!!:)

The one you posted on top of this thread comes the closest to my way of liking! I might still like it better if the ricasso was more in line with the lines of the handle, but again, that's just a purely visual preference of mine.
And as Rebeltf said, maybe a tad pointier, and I guess truth be told, it would give it more of the 5.5" Kabar shorty profile with a nicer grind!
My only other concern would be that I would prefer to wrap the handle with paracord, for shock absorption and insulation (as I would think the handle would get rather warm in some climes and terribly cold in some, as do the CRK's!)
Would there be any modificarion you could think of that would allow a para-wrap that wouldn't interfere with unsrewing the buttcap? (Just thinking outloud... because I do like that knife!!! )
Keep up the great work!!! :D

I was lucky enough to be able to get this knife from Ray and I can say, without doubt, it's one of the best deals I ever got for the $$$'s.....;)

Superb and absolutely true grinds, fit, and a beautiful hand-rubbed finish with a razor-sharp cutting edge.....it just doesn't get any better, IMHO.

Thank you, Ray, for a magnificent piece of work.......please put me down for your smaller version.......hope I'm not too far back. :D

Ray... I like them all. I think my favorite of the ones you've done would be the bottom blade in the picture, w/a slight modification.

That being a little less "bellie" in the front of the blade and more pointy... if that makes any sense. I little like the blade profile in the top picture, but w/the top swedge cut like the bottom blade.

They're all very nice though.

I agree Redsnake, about the belly on the lower one. I would like a little more point but the size is good. These are all very nice and desirable blades. I'd be proud to own any one of them.
For me the Ideal size for an "all rounder" is 5". Anything more and you really need a hatchet or machete. That being said, these are up to the task demanded of them.
