I have *got to* find a lighter that will work in even the worst weather and that does not look like crap.

Any suggestions?

I think the most common response may be the classic Zippo. They are sleek, trendy, functionable, reliable.

But I hate them, because they always seem to leak fuel. That is, I might fill one up on the weekend, and not use it all week (I don't really smoke so often), and then by the next weekend try to use it only to find that it's empty. Or near empty.

I have an inexpensive butane lighter, seen here:
http://www.essentialgear.com/store.cgi?action=link&sku=405FireOne

But then again I've never pushed it's limits or tried using it at high altitudes or anything like that. It's just been used to light cigarettes in the city, burn paracord ends, ... yea that's it.

I don't like butane-torch type lighters such as the afformentioned because they seem to consume entirely too much fuel. I don't use this thing that often, but this thing empties out pretty frequently.

I've always had really good results with just the cheap Bic lighters. (cheap bic lighters? definately an inappropriate answer for the 'gadgets and gear forum') They aren't waterproof though.

Just my observations.

I gotta cast my vote for Zippo. What other lighter has stood the test of time better?

Don't smoke anymore, but I still appreciate a cool lighter. I like the piezo/butane ones.
I have a Colibri CX Gear lighter with...ready...a LED flashlight in the bottom. How's that for gaget factor ?

I have 2 windmill lighters and although they're great for outdoor use.
Very tough casing.

I have the Delta Series and the Shock proof. I think 1sks has them.

Ira, get a zippo. You can get one that looks good (carbon fibre, ti engraved) without too much trouble..

I recieved a Zippo Fuel Canister for Christmas, so I always have a refill (actually it holds closer to two) if it dries out...

What do you mean, "look like crap"? Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

I have a Brunton Helios that I picked up because it was on clearance somewhere. It has adjustments for altitude..blah, blah, blah. It's kinda big though. I have a neat little Colibri that's nice looking and works all the time. I also have more than a few Zippos that I like. I have a cheapie Ronson that looks like it's been run over more than a few times (it probably has, I found it in the street) that still works like a champ. On occasion, I've been known to carry "strike anywhere" matches, it's fun to light those with your thumb like a lighter.

Gotta chime in a vote for a Zippo. Great "cheap" high off the lighter fluid. For gadget factor, either a Brunton Firelight with the LED or a Colibri Quantum. If you really want a flame, a Bernzomatic with a MAPP gas canister.

I picked up a Matte Black Zippo on eBay a few months ago for around $8 shipped. Even came with a Zippo flint holder and extra wick. There were 4 extra flints in the holder and to my surprise, 3 more in the cotton. I think for the price, get a Zippo (or a BIC).

I've had very good experience with the piezoelectric butane lighters from Windmill.

This is the Delta Shockproof. Clean, HOT, easy to fill, stays lit anywhere but underwater, and pretty bombproof. Not without detractors, but I've had good luck with the two I have.

For the price, you can't beat a Zippo. If yours leaks, send it in for repair. Sometimes it needs a better fit. I have Zippos. My 1941 replica black crackle one was leaking. I swapped the insides with another lighter, now it stays full for weeks on end, if I don't use it.

Thanks guys!!!

Either going to buy a Zippo or a Windmill or a......................:D

If you want a stylish lighter, totally windproof, try the I M Corona lighters at Savinelli. They have a ton of lighters.
Keep in mind that some of these are only for cigarettes, meaning that the cigarette has to be held very close to the lighter. I have this one (4631 Chromium Lines)
They're really well made.

I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've got the brass effect one and it's one big lighter...great for outdoors...took forever to fill it up....

When I first read your reply a few days ago I went to Vector's site to look around. Here's a quote from one of their pages regarding their "Lean-Burn" technology:

"First, it drastically reduces the gas consumption rate of a lighter by more than 100%."

(Found here)

IOW, they state that the dang thing MAKES gas as you use it. (A 100% reduction = 0 fuel usage.) I dropped them a polite email (well, as polite as I'm cabable of making it ;)), but got no reply and the text is just as I found it. So, I must assume one (or perhaps more) of the following:

1. Their advertising claims are deliberately inflated.
or
2. Their webmaster is really busy and hasn't had time to change it.
or
3. They're too stupid to understand why their claims are senseless.
or
4. They think their potential customers are stupid.

Unless number 2 is the correct assumption, I wouldn't buy a book of matches from them, let alone an 80 dollar lighter that doesn't make its own gas as claimed by Vector.

I just bought a Brunton Firelight for $39 at Cabela's, and even though IT doesn't make it own gas either, I'm quite pleased with it. Of course, Brunton doesn't claim that it makes its own gas -- so I've no reason to be disappointed.

Shalom,
Mark
