another idea for a tang pin fix

We all know that after a while the tang pin mashes divots into the bali's handles. Clay's site has some tips for fixing this, but like he says, they are not a permanent fix.

Has anyone tried removing the existing tang pin, then drilling the tang pin hole wider, then using a wider nail as a new tang pin? I think it should work as long as you dont mess up while reaming the tang hole. If the tang pin is too wide, you'd just take a dremel to the two points of contact on each side.

Any thoughts?

Maybe a roll-pin would be good. These come in standard diameters, would be easy to install and would stay put by their own design.

Yeah, I did something similar to that.. I have a batch of interesting looking torx head screws that have worked great for tang pin replacements. It seems that the bigger the pin, the longer it lasts.. more contact surface area = better I guess. It's still not permanent though. What would happen if the tang pin were coated with a tough rubber or something to preserve the handles?

I've never drilled out the Tang pin hole. Sounds like a good idea though.

The closest I've come is, pulling the old tang pin and replacing it with a nail of the same diameter. BUT, I left the length a bit longer so it didn't sink into the dents in the handles.

It held up pretty good, and lasted quite awhile too.

I like your idea better though. I'll have to try that. Now if I can only get the handles to outlast the tang pin, I'll be set.

Hey clay, be sure to post an update if it works for you. I'll do the same, but it will have to wait till I move back home after finals... thats were the tools are

I think this mod will require some patience and finesse. The idea came to me after botching up a pin fix by replacing the pin with a longer one as you just said. For this to work, I had to use the dremel to extend the "cups" on the handle. Of course, I went a little over board with the dremel. The blade locked up tight for a week, then started to get loose again. But I dont mind. Im stating to think doing mods on your blade is half the fun of owning a bali....

Clay - and anyone else drilling a hardened blade - remember to be patient, use a sharp carbide bit and cutting oil! that way you will avoid having the bit break off in the hole and forming your new tang pin!

OK, update time....

My opinion changed... drilling out a tang pin sounds simple at first, but would turn into a b!tch of a project early on (my opinion, mind you). I didnt even want to attemt it.

Fortunately for me, I came up with an equally effective fix for my bali that initially sparked the idea for this tang fix thread....

Here's what I did... I inserted a screw thru the tang hole then cut off the excess on the end with the screw's head. Then, using a 3/8ths inch wide metal cylinder that is threaded on its inside, I screwed a cylinder on each side of the screw/tang pin.
This made for a huge tang pin (big like on Bear's???) but in my case, the pin would come in contact with the entire width of the handle. But for this to happen, I had to use the dremel to carve out huge "cups" in the handle to accept the larger tang pin. This was the hardest part, but toward the end I was able to use a round file that luckily was the same width of the tang pin to finish shaping the cups. I was so impressed with my handiwork that I thought you'd like to see the finished product...

oh yeah, forgot to say that the mod turned out great. In shaping the cups I left enough material there to have to squease the handles to lock it open, and it locks up really solid...a huge improvement from its earlier state...

one more thing: sorry, I cant tell ya where to find these metal cylinder thingies. I found it in a box full of screws and nails and stuff in my dad's basement (he saves anything anf everything)

I've always wondered why all the handle holes are so ridiculously bigger in diameter then the handle pins? Or, why the pins are so small? If the diameter of the handle holes and the tang pin, they must fit MUCH better and the pin will hardly dig divots.

I don't think nobody has thought of this thing. Is there any reason?
