  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

I've been toying with something lately.

When I did a lot of dualsport riding, I converted one of my hardbags into an additional fuel cell and used an electric inline pump to pump the fuel from that cell to the gas tank. Worked like a champ. It all happened with the push of a button on my hand controls. I was actually really proud of it.

Now that I have a truck, I was marveling at the distance I can get on my 25 gallon tank. For a 5.4litre V8, this thing gets great gas milage. Then i thought, "what if I had an extra fuel cell? That could possibly get me twice the distance AND keep me from having to stop and get gas on the way to various parents and parents-n-law houses! Now that sounds like the bomb."

Not to mention how cool that could be when you find yourself in a situation where you need to be able to carry a lot of fuel, like for instance if there's a fuel crisis, or all of the gas stations in the U.S. are all of a sudden screwed up.

So has anyone else ever thought of or actually done this. I really think I'm seriously going to do it. I'm willing to sacrifice a little bed space. It couldn't possibly be that hard to rig up. Figuring out how to do the transfer pump is the only thing I could see taking any time.

A lot of pick ups come with dual tanks so it shouldn't be hard to find the parts to rig up your own secondary tank and put a switch in the dash or console.

I was going to say the same thing. My roomate works on the rigs out here in Wyoming, and he set up and extra fuel cell in the bed of his truck. I will get you some specs if you want. He is doing 28 days on and 14 off, he should be home in a week or so.

Lots of alternatives out there man - just don't go with the budget model that is made in China

That'd be awesome man. I'd love to see it.

I dont know of you remember the old VW pick up with a diesel engine. I knew a guy who put an extra tank in the bed. Mind you that truck gets 50+mpg if you dont push it hard. He drove it to his parents farm I think it was in kansas from CA with only bathroom stops. He also had an electric fuel pump with a return line so it wont over fill the main tank. One of those cool guys that grow up on a farm..

sure have! my old 78 Bronco had a 100 liter main, 200liter reserve, 200 liter 2nd reserve and 6 x 20 liter jerry cans. all to fuel a 500 CI custom big block stump puller engine
