I received another kitchen knife from Sal the other day: here is a pic of it below:
View

Its labeled: TAKEFU, hand-made, traditional & contemporary, and ARTUS PROFESSIONAL. OAL is 350mm with 205mm blade. It is flat ground from 1/8" stock and the skeleton handle looks it had been welded on. One side is entirely flat ground, and while the other is partially flat ground (~1/2 way). You can see the nice hardening line which is about 3/16" up from the edge (this may not show up very well in the picture).

This knife has a different feel to it all together than the other kitchen knives that I have tried. Pure right handed knife because of the how the grind is set up. I have used it on some vegetables so far, and it doesn't slice as well as the other kitchen knives I have I tested.

Sal, I am sorry I haven't gotten this up sooner: its been a bit crazy on my end. I will use it for another week, or so and send it back in. Perhaps you can fill us in on the type of blade steel. Thanks for sending the knife for me to try out.

That's a beauty! Try it on some raw fish and see how it performs. That looks like a sush/sashimi knife. With Sal sending you all these great knives to test, you should change your name from maddog2020 to luckydog!

Maddog - I don't know the steel on the new piece It's not something we're likely to make. Very expensive.

It's a custom forged steel made by a group of makers in the Sakai prefecture. They specialize in these types of knives.

Thought you might enjoy playing with it though.

Lokelani - The Chinese Slicer is a Bob Lum design. We should have a proto by Blade Show. Should have been a secret that only a few know about???

Day-um! Another Bob Lum knife that I'm going to have to watch for. Here I thought the "Chinese Utility" knife was coming out RSN (for the past year) and now another one that sounds like a must have.

Sal, you pusher, you! You just keep us hanging on.

It is still in prototype development stage so there is little to be said. We'll need to make a few protos to determine grinds, thickness, etc. Have to use it in the kitchen, etc.

Hi Sal,

My initial impression still stands. I'm not crazy about the blade shape regardless which hand I am holding the knife with and slicing with it. Skeleton handle is funky: I still like some other synthetic material, or wood.

SteveB wanted to see the knife so I would like to hold on to it until I can hook up with him. I hope that is OTAY.

If you read this Steve, shoot me an e-mail ASAP ....LOL.

Worse case I should be able to return it next week. I'll drop an e-mail when I do. Thanks again, its a lot of fun using these kitchen knives! I'm spoiled by it.

I dont like takefu.
Now takefu make knifes etc from low grade of daido materials.
But they say usually that this is a hitach yasuki steel usua.
And if steels is adimered, they said "This is one of takefu steel."But i think really urgly things like this.

Gawd you dug up an OLD thread, japansteel! :p

Its been a LONG time since Sal sent me a kitchen knife to try. He is a busy man. I've been away from BF for a while now, many of my buddies still hang out here. :)

I own & use several customs made by many big names, but I still use my Spydercos each day at work: PE Calypso LTWT JR & a PE Meerkat (I love the skeleton pocket clip that looks like a paper clip).

I'm not up to date with most of the new products. I've been busy with other things: trying to be a better father to my almost 6 yr old daughter. :D

Just popped in to say " HOWDY folks!" Those that remember me. ;)
