I just finished another knife.
This time I followed this procedure. It softened up great and took a lot less effort to grind it, in fact, I mostly used a Dremel and a file for it. That backyard heat treat worked pretty well too, it's hard enough to hold an edge anyway. The handles are cow bone, imitation stag, they're glued on, I was going to use corby bolts but I didn't make the holes in the handle big enough before heat treating.
