Hi Guys,
I want to buy a Lansky sharpening kit.
2 months ago I tried to purchase one on line from some place on the net.
I received an e-mail confirming my order and an e-mail address to which I could direct any inquiries. After about 1 month I sent an e-mail to this address enquiring about the status of my order and got no reply.
My CC has not been billed so it does not look like I have been scammed but 2 months does seem like a long time, Montreal is not THAT far from the States.

Unfortunately there are no suppliers up here for some reason or I would have just gone and bought one long ago. Anybody ever had a similar problem with this sort of thing? I have purchased other things on line from the US and they got here pretty fast.

Also, I was thinking of the Deluxe kit but is it that really necessary? Wouldn't the basic kit be good enough? The only significant difference I can see is that you get an extra guide rod, an extra coarse stone and an ultra fine stone. Dunno if that is really necessary. I put the innitial edge on with the belt grinder anyway.

Any advice regarding both topics will be greatly appreciated.

i would go with the cheap one. i got one of those and the stones fell off the thing after a few weeks. so i bought a cheap ez lap dimond stone and epoxied it to the stone holder and it works great.

i would reffer a dimond stone over most any other
1 they nevery wear out
2 they have a solid metal backing and cannot be broken from dropping or anything that would usually happen
i mean you would have to grind these things to tear them up
3 you dont need to use lubricant
i just wipe the stone off with my pants and everyonce in a while wash it in water and soap.

I have the 5 stone kit. The extra coarse is pretty good if you have a blade that is really dull. Personally I would go with the 3 stone kit and just buy an extra coarse if you need it. I strop the blade after sharpening so I never use the white extra fine much. (the white stone will polish a mirror finish on your edge).

Try smoky mountian knifeworks, www.eknifeworks.com they are top rate in customer service and they sell the whole lansky line including the replacement stones.

I bought a five stone Lansky, new in the box, off Ebay. Price w/ shipping was $30.00. There were several listed and I got this one and had it in hand within 3 days. The system has worked for me in putting a good edge on. I take it to the burr with the medium stone and then use a strop to finish.

Miden,
I just looked in my drawer to make sure, yes I bought a "deluxe Lansky sharpening system" plus the extra stone for serations. I got it all at SIR mail order sporting goods in Winnipeg (canada). They will certainly ship to Montreal. I bought mine when I was living in Winnipeg.

Bartblade,
I have used a Lansky sharpener for many years. I origanlly bought the 5 stone kit and later upgraded to the diamond hones.
This system works great but as for the diamond hones never wearing out........well I had to replace them twice. They hold up well enough that if you're only sharpening you own personal knives a few times a year they will probably last quite a while. But I used mine to sharpen not only my personal knives but those that I made for others.
The diamond hones would last for a couple of months and then were so smooth as to be worthless. Not worth the price to me.
Just my .02

I found the same thing with the lansky diamond hones. I think I sharpened about 7 or 8 seriously dull blades and the two coarse and extra coarse hones were kaput. I went back to my older lansky set after that.

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated as always.

Great to hear also that there is an outlet in Montreal. I did a search on the Lansky site and within a 100 mile radius they only showed outlets in NY State and Vermont.

Seems e-bay is a good way to go as well and Smokey Mountain has a great price on the basic kit. $24.99. That is $10.00 less than for what I tried to buy it for at the other place. Hope they never process my order!!

Thanks for the experiences with the diamond kits and everything else.:D

Very decent of you all to take the trouble.

sincerely,

Mike

Probably said before me and I do not have time to read all the postings to this thread. I have gone through two Lansky's. The latest was (is) the diamond stones. The rougher the diamond the faster it will wear. We must remember that as makers we are not resharpening but instead originally taking much steel off to make an edge. I DO NOT recommend the diamond version for makers. I would not buy the version with the most stones either. As a maker the stone most used will be the coursest. It will wear faster than all others. You will soon learn that the mediium grit is about as fine as you will need (generally but not for presentation). It is also many times good to leave the edge a bit toothy and going super fine will not provide that.

If you turn or are pro I like the Edge Pro. Its pricey but does the job REAL well. The Lansky is great, in my book, for resharpening for the knife user.
