I'm going to say of the two series, I enjoyed the Canada series more. There was a lot more interaction with the dog teams and it showed both the challenges and successes of living and caring for the team as well as the heartbreak of losing team members do to the rigors of sled dog life. The series was also more focussed on the immense task of crossing the Canadian Arctic and it seemed that his small amount of time re-aquainting himself with civilization was just as entertaining as his wilderness pursuits. Having him gobble the beer down at the hotel was fun and the awkwardness of his cabin crashers who wanted to get drunk with him was also quite entertaining. The situation of having to shoot the polar bear and then fess up to it with the game warden was also a great addition.
On the 365 series, the flow of the program seemed really broken up by the event-based episodes like the dog-race which while cool in itself was also very detracting from the rest of the episode. I liked the elk hunt but wasn't as excited about the reindeer herding and all the snowmobile travelling. Plus there was just too damn much fishing. I love fishing, but it seemed to get in the way of the series which was more goal orientated about exploring and the constant fishing, fishing, fishing detracted from the central story line quite a bit. The bit where his girlfriend comes riding in with the team of dogs for Christmas was great. The very short talk with the bear expert was also great. I think I'm being picky here. I kind of wish I watched 365 first and the Canada series second even though the 365 series was made a few years after. I did like both series quite a bit though. I also like how he goes with the flow on equipment, using what he needs, exchanging items as appropriate. Sometimes he goes with a stove, others an axe. His thrill of building fires in a Scotch Pine forest, his comical demonstration of the Swedish splitter, his buddy calling bullshit on him with his grayling lure con...It was all pretty good!
