Another LB7 question

I have seen several LB7s online with the finger scallops cut in the handle. Did Schrade ever make LB7s with this feature, or is that something someone did afterward to customize them?

Thanks,

DAve

I have two of these with the fingergrooves. On one its a very amateurish attempt. On the second its well done and looks like it came from a custom shop.I've asked on here before for any information on these anyone had but got no hard information.LT did say they were not made in the Schrade custom shop.Arnold

You may have already observed that Schrade knives customised after they leave the factory can still fetch good prices, it seems to depend on the name of the customiser and their reputation (ie are they known)?
I recal seeing a custom LB7 on ebay that was customised with nice materials but showed very poor quality workmanship.
Larry has a couple of rare LB7s with finger grooves that are superb.

These are my two. They are posted in my collection at Larry's site.Arnold

Nice Arnold, Both mine on Larry's site are inscribed M.Trutschel.Really like to know more about this gentleman as his work is outstanding and he reads the natural contours of the LB7 perfectly. Anyone heard of him? Hoo Roo

OK, rather than just start another thread with the same title, thought I'd add on to this one.

Got an LB7 I recently won on ebay in today. Still wrapped in original paper inside the sheath. By all initial appearances, it is a very nice knife, although only a non-serialized 3-pin plain jane LB7. However, with the knife closed, there is a good amount of sideways play in the blade. Enough it can easily move side-to-side and make contact with the brass insides of the knife. If I open it up, it tightens up considerably, with only the slightest bit of wiggle. Why would it have so much play when closed, but next to nothing when open? And is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks,

Dave

From the sounds of it you are describing something familiar, I have found some of my Schrade LB7s have a small amount of side play. What you are probably noticing is that the blade seems to move more when closed because the movement however small seems more exagerated when its compaired against the brass liners than when its out and fully locked. If your sure that there is actuallly more movement when its closed there may be a problem.

I dont like any of my LB7s having any side play at all but occasoinally they do have a little, this doesnt really concern me as it doesnt effect function and Schrade seem to allow for this within in there tolerances or at least it seems they passed there quality control regardless of what some may call an apparent defect.

Its really difficult to say what is normal but Schrades are such a fine quality product and I usually forgive just a little side play in the blade if I find it occasionally.

Another LB7 with finger grooves recently sold on eBay and was described as never used or sharpened:

Unlike the crude workmanship I've seen on other examples from time to time, this one looks very well done by whoever did it.

Yeah, i thought it looked pretty good and bid on it for a while, but it ended up going a little higher than I was prepared to pay for it.
