Another mini-PM2 chop

I previously chopped down another PM2 that gets a ton of use, but decided I wanted to try a more sheepsfoot-esque blade shape. Copped a user off the exchange and got down and dirty.

WOW - That is really nice. Can you give us a bit of detail on how you do this. Do you think a weekend warrior would be able to get close :)

Very nice and creative. You should definitely show it to Spyderco. It's a lot nicer than a whole bunch of their knives and it seem to be a lot sturdier blade. You can call it the Toucan (it looks like it's beak). I also like the way you finished the scales, it's a lot richer looking. I would buy that knife. You sould trr doing it with a Manix 2 XL or similar size blade I think it would look great.

Looks good.

But no tip up.
Thanks man! Yeah, I used to be a strictly tip down, anti tip up typa dude, but I've come to prefer tip up - try it out for a week man! But to be honest, I have a twin brother and I haven't even converted him either...
Have you done a Southard a la Smock?

Yup, that was my very first chop mod! Was just lusting after Smock's mini-Southards, but not able to swing the $$$, so I made my own. It turned out way better than I expected, and got me hooked on chopping knives. That was exactly a year ago, almost to the day!

I just use a dremel (w/ reinforced cutting wheels) to chop, then a belt sander to round off things. Back to the dremel (w/ sanding barrels) to further round and smooth, then sandpaper by hand. Be sure to cool off the blade when cutting/grinding/sanding(not by hand) - I just douse the blade in water every few seconds during any of those processes. You can do it man, just tape off everything that you're not messing with to avoid scratches. I also use painter's tape to mask off the cuts beforehand, and play around with the tape position to visualize the new blade and handle shapes. Then use a steel ruler to help guide the dremel. Hope that helps!

Link/pics ... ?

Well done! Blade shape is super for press cuts, and the smaller profile is a welcome pocket option e.g. with hiking shorts.

I like it..

I'm guessing holes could be drilled and tapped for tip up as well?

Thanks Marcus. Yeah, I just got a drill press and tap for just that purpose. I'm actually starting to prefer tip down carry recently, and may easily just keep this one as is.

Here's an imgur album showing some of the process. The final version has a different scale - got a black g10 scale from Steve Ketchen that I contoured, and that's what she's been wearing primarily.

Thx.
That looks great.
Ever since I saw the first chopped Southard, Ive been wanting to do that to my Spydie Southard.
Must admit that I like that one far better than the shortened PM2.
