Another minor victory for the Maoists. My ulcer's back.

Due to aggravation, concern, worry, failures, all of which I can trace back to the Maoists my ulcer has gone on active duty again. Bad weekend. Got to cut out or at least down on my Heinekens and get back on the meds. I hate it.

May have to back off until I get the ulcer under control -- very bad night last night.

Stay tuned.

Take care of yourself, Uncle.

Try not to worry about things you can't control. It's an early grave otherwise. :(

Slowing down on the Heineken might be a good idea too. I cut back on my beloved Budweiser and feel better for it. :)

Hey, Prilosec and Nexium are wonder drugs. They make life worth living again.

My drug knowledge is zilch. What are these things? Happy pills or ulcer meds? My current treatment consists of a couple of over the counter meds, bland diet, and little or no alcohol.

What concerns me a little more is the same things that give me the ulcer are also bad medicine for this overhauled ticker of mine.

Bill, go to a drug store and get some zantac 75 take 2. If most of your problems are at night take it about 2 hours or so before bedtime.
Give it a week and see if that works for you. It wont "cure" the ulcer, but it will help with the acid in the stomach, makes it alot more comfortable.
If that dosent help then do 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. You can take up to 600 mg of zantac (ranitidine) per day, but at this point if 300 per day is not helping it could be a serious problem.

If the 300 mg a day regiment dosent work, then its time for a trip to the doc for some pepcid, prilosec or nexium (beware, a months supply without insurance is going to run from $60-$110.)

Feel free to contact me through e-mail if you have any questions.

Right now I'm on the pepcid and Mylanta.

Many thanks for what sounds like professional help. Harry used to be the resident apothecary but now he's found a girl and has no time for us anymore -- not that I blame him.

Im not a Pharmicist, but I play one on the internet. :)

But seriously, I am doing my internship right now. Still about a year away from graduation.
This goes for everyone if you have any questions about meds feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help, it would be pay back for all the volumes of education this forum has provided me.

Bill,
It sounds like the Pepcid (Famotidine) is not working too well, you can do 80mg per day of that. (I think its more, but I dont have a Facts book handy right now.) But might want to talk to the doc about switching to Prilosec, or upping the Pepcid.

Uncle Bill?

In the swamp of My mind, I seem to remember reading about
the use of antibiotics to cure ulcers. Not just relieve the
pain, but cure them. As I remember some specific type of
bacteria was found to cause some types of ulcers.

It stuck in my mind because of all the friends I've had
who were plagued by them.

Might be worth an inquiry to your MD.

Kis

We're all in this together.

You're right, Kis. If it progresses to bleeding mode I'll see my ulcer doc.

Eich, I have the pepcid 10MG tabs and am taking 4 or 5 tabs per day. If things don't improve by tomorrow AM I'll double the dose. Thanks again for good help.

Uncle Bill,
I will talk to Chamaine and see if she knows anything that might help you! I know she will say "get to your doctor" but she just got her CPhT(Certified Pharmacy Technician) so she might know a trick or two! In the mean time take it easy and relax!!!;)

I've heard of some issues with Prilosec and vitamin B absorption. Any of you pharmies know anything about that?

Prilosec and Nexium are both prescription acid-reducing drugs. They also help stomach problems heal. I use Prilosec and it's great. Expensive though, if you have no insurance. Otherwise Zantac, or Tagamet, or the other over the counter drug work pretty well (darn memory).
Alcohol, caffeine, Aspirin or other anti inflammatories, and cigarettes are the worst thing for your stomach according to my doctor. (Sorry Uncle Bill)

Take care my friend,
Steve

I know I'm setting myself up with the coffee, alcohol, aspirin and cigarettes but I'm addicted to three and gotta take the aspirin for heart considerations. The upside is when things are more or less normal I can get by despite these self destructive intakes. But when things go to hell and the stress level goes up it puts me over the edge.

I'll fight it with the pepcid and Mylanta, cut down on the alcohol, watch my diet and see what happens. A little good news from Nepal (none for a couple of days which ups the stress factor) would help a lot.

Bill - If you're a caffeine addict, try dumping the coffee and switching to tea for your caffeine fix.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a Brit; I used to practically live on coffee until it started burning holes in my guts. For the last 7 years or so, I've drunk tea instead, and in my personal experience, it's a far more effective antacid than anything I've had from the doctor or the pharmacy.

Until I recently moved to Kentucky I worked with GI Docs every day as an Endoscopic Technician. You really need to see a GI specialist if you're not already. GP docs and Internists really aren't up on the latest discoveries and treatments. Beer, cigarettes and aspirin are a total nightmare to GI docs and I've personally seen the results on an ulcerated stomach. How was your ulcer diagnosed? Many more serious Gastric problems can be misdiagnosed as "an Ulcer" without adequate testing. I had a serious Hiatal Hernia- a condition where your stomach is pushed up through your diaphram- misdiagnosed by a family medecine doc as exercise induced asthma! If your GP or internist believes you have an ulcer he or she should refer you to a GI doc for immediate follow up. Of course you shouldn't discontinue your aspirin if your Cardiologist put you on it, but you should make sure any GI doc you see knows about it.....

Well, I'm starting to rant, but I and many others here enjoy associating and doing buisness with you and I know a little about this subject. If you want me to try and help with any information feel free to email me:o

Uncle, see a specialist, a lot of changes in ulcer treatment in recent years and not all GPs are up to speed. You may be suffering for no reason. Well, the beer and cigs are one reason but you may be able to get to feeling better faster with some new treatments. I still have reflux, where my stomach tries to crawl up my esophagas but my ulcers are gone and have stayed away for years.
Good luck and take care of yourself.

I go to a clinic here called Digestive Health Center -- 5 ot 6 doctors specializing in GI ailments with all the back up tools and personnel. They are pretty good.

Ulcer was disagnosed by endoscopy. And I am past due for my 5 year colonoscopy. Got to get that done in the near future.

I'm like a Kathmandu taxi -- worn out and ready for the junk yard but some tape, glue and wire keeps it going another day or two.

I may give up the aspirin until this gets settled down and cut down on Heineken. Coffee, cigarettes and Pepcid standard breakfast.

Switch to Yuengling Black & Tan - It helped my stomach this weekend. There's something about chewy beer that seems to help what ails you.
