Another moron lost in the woods

Amazing that people have so little sense of self-preservation. I liked one of he comments but the other was terrible.

This makes sense. A few knowledgeable old timers might talk some sense into people wandering off to die before it's too late -- although they can't be faulted if they don't catch everyone!

If you add up all the people that have been lost in our north shore mountains with some that are found safely and others that are not. I think a wise investment would be for 1-2 park wardens that patrol these trails or at the very least, "meet" hikers before they venture out.
For these tourists, the warden could let them know that they are under-dressed and under-prepared for the elements, plus they are perhaps starting their hike too late.
With all the number of retirees in society, I'm sure some of them could be ambassadors/wardens that would love the walk, daily interactions and perhaps a bit of income.
This would definitely put less strain on NS Rescue. Because it's been the same message and some people just don't listen.

This next one is just dumb. Why make the mountains look like an amusement park because a few can't bother to carry map and compass? I hate going into woods and seeing signs of "civilization" tacked up everywhere

Second, it would be nice if the mountain actually marked the trail properly so you don't get off track. In Vancouver I have noticed that the most widely used trails are not properly marked (typically you tie color coded trail markers along the path so you know you are on the right path). I'm sure if you properly tie trail markers on the BCMC path then you would save some grief over looking for these lost hikers.

Good thing he didn't die of exposure.

A keyring light, a lighter and a whistle would have weighed nothing and been pretty handy to have. Could have worn it all around his neck.

The poorly marked trail he was lost on runs roughly parallel to the well know, well marked trail called the Grouse Grind
Lets just replace all trails with gravel highways and we will be set.

For F's sake people this is Canada, you should come here to visit because there's no buggers here

It's been a while since I've been to Grouse Mountain, but don't you run into Vancouver if you just head down hill? I see mountain bikers in my neck of the woods head out all the time for a late afternoon ride without lights. It's so easy just to throw in a headlight. Amazing. Glad he survived.

um no...Vancouvers mountains lead into gullies.....often you cannot get OUT of them once you are in. Plus we have extreme weather conditions......Vancouver might be sunny, but the mountains will be 0 degrees and pissing rain...........

I heard that there was a couple of inches of snow were he was found. I think on the radio it said something like 7 cms

Yup ... what Bushman5 said. The North Shore mountains are very convoluted in places. In addition to exposure, many people die from falling off precipitous drops. I've heard of several stories where people just stumble off the edge of these chasms b/c they don't have a light. Or they've skied out-of-bounds, got lost and then tried to ski-out. They're found a few days later at the base of some cliff. The problem with these mountains is that they're right on the edge of a giant metropolis and are highly accessible. They're full-on mountains with dense forests, cliff bands, raging rivers, cold + unpredictable weather, and snow. People without the skills, knowledge, training, and equipment explore them thinking they're in their urban neighborhood park.

Occasionally, I snowshoe run or trail run on these same trails [there are 100s of kms] and would never bring a small survival kit, but I ONLY [with no exceptions] stick to trials I know extremely well and I usually have a light. If I'm out exploring and covering new ground, I always have a small pack with the basics.

That guy was very lucky he made it and was found so quickly. I'm sure any of us (hopefully :o) would have at least had a daypack or a psk with a knife and fire starting capability. Not to mention, descent clothing for the weather. Did this guy really have NOTHING on him? Not even a bottle of water.....something?....anything?!!

I liked Mr. Jones quotes in the story speaking of common sense, which the guy in the story apparently had none :p

It's not something you'd want to do at night, but yeah If you just go southwest you'll make it out eventually. You want to go southwest because that part of the mountain is extremely steep. Cuts the grade quite a bit, and civilization is built on an that angle anyways. There is only one gully, and to my knowledge It never gets too deep. I think Tim actually commented on how He shouldn't have been going down the trail, because it is very steep. Typically you hike the trail up, around, and come out at Lynn valley or fromme. I've gone down it and it is rather sketchy to be a trail recommended for tourists. Also is rather poorly marked.

Tim Jones Is the father of a girl in my class. He used to come in for career days and give a little talk. Then let us climb all over the BAT mobile. Very nice fellow, lives down the street.

I'd like to see more people praising the brave and successful activities of the SAR rather than pointing their fingers at the victim and talking about repercussions to a victim who came here to visit our country and its beauty. Why do we focus so much on the victim. We have heroes here like Tim Jones to rejoice!

I would love to here the inside scoop about the rescue and how they found him, timelines etc. Maybe Munky88 can give use the story in the future.
