Hi:

I have been lurking in the forum for quite some time now, but I got my first HI khukuri two weeks ago. It was one of the now infamous PGAs, a15" AK by Sanu. I know that some of you are tired of this reviews, but I have to let it out of my system: HI ROCKS!
Ok, now let’s continue with the normal broadcast. I have a couple of questions. The scabbard of my AK is broke on the edge side, and I would like to have it repaired. It is the Sarki Shop still working? If not, can anyone here guide me on the process?
My second question is for Uncle Bill. I like the big karda that comes with the YCS. It is possible to buy it alone, with plain wood handles?
Thank you for infecting me.

Teo

Welcome to the Cantina, Teo.

The sarki shop is closed and I don't know any forumites who are doing scabbard work for hire. If I was going to put a fix on that scabbard I'd get a couple or three feet of heavy romax cable and take the copper wire out of it and wrap the scabbard with it. But I usually do things the easiest and cheapest way I can find -- don't care much about looks as long as it works.

Teo,

Welcome to the Cantina. Do you have a picture of that scabbard?

Hi Not2Sharp:

I can't post any images utill next tuesday, but it is just open along the edge side. If I am not carefull drawing or inserting the khukuri, the blade goes through :( I am not a woodchuck, so I'll probably follow uncle Bill's system.

If it's just separated you can probably fill the hole with a little expoxy and sawdust and it will be as good as new.

Welcome to the Cantina Teo!!!!:)
N2S probably has the best idea if you want it to look nice.
Another option may be to take the scabbard around to some local shoe repair shops.
A decent cobbler can work on anything made of leather practically and should be able to wrap another piece of leather around the cut part and either sew or glue it in place.

Welcome Teo!:)

I don't often do this (as I don't know 1/1000th as much about these things as he does) but I'm going to "improve"on Yvsa's idea. If you go to the cobbler, see if he can take the leather off enough to allow you to wrap some thin/strong wire a few turns around and THEN do leather repair. The down side of this is it might foster bad khuk drawing habits that could lead to a serious cut with a non-wire wrapped scabbard.

Of course all of the above advice hinges on the scabbard being damaged right at the mouth.

Oh, and I NEVER tire of hearing reviews. It allows me to live vicarously through new forumites until my next purchase, thus easing my HIKV:D

Even safer, better, and prettier is to look in Howard's Faq's ( the link is under Uncle's signature ) and take a look at the fancy carved wooden chainpuri scabbards that are held together by brass strips. A little bending and a little soldering and it'll be way better than new. Course you want to fix the original problem redundantly so's it stay's fixed.

Hopefuly, you will both have the opportunity to repeat, many many times. Welcome, Teo.

Welcome Teo :)

I don't know half so much about repair as some of the others, but I did have a khukuree whose scabbard was broken and split spine-side (rather dangerous it was though, because the way that the scabbard + khukuree are shaped, replacing it in the sheath the sharp point was shoot through the hole -- which was exactly where one had one's hand  )...

in any case, I fitted together a couple of bits of wood and glued those into place and then glued and clamped down the leather over top of it and voila it was fixed. But perhaps your problem is rather differnt..

cheers, B.

Thank you all for your help, I think I will go for the wire. I can't wait to use the khukuri.:D I think you would undestand.
I have another question, and I think you can also help me. I would like to buy only the big karda that comes with the YCS. Is it sold separatelly?
Teo

We don't sell that karda as a separate item and I'm afraid to try to order one. After you've been here awhile you'll understand why.
