I have recently been tasked with selling my deceased father in law's knife collection. There are approximately 1000. Yes, I am in way over my head.

I know nothing about knives, but am learning rapidly...kind of like drinking through a fire hose. A friend recommended this site as a good venue to sell them, that you guys would appreciate them. I am actually starting to appreciate them in the few weeks I have been handling them.

Anyhow, can someone please tell me what the "2N" on this label means?...if anything, the one to the left of the manufacture date. I think I have figured out the rest. 160 Saddlehorn box.jpg

Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

The reason I am asking is because I have the receipts for the knives I am trying to sell for my MIL and on some of the line items, it indicated that it was part of a limited release or whatever the correct term in. Some say LMT to 500.

This one with 2N is the one I had handy. I have a ton yet to photograph.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have been reading about knives for years, and I still do not have a real feel for what most of them will bring on the open market. If you think you are in over your head, it might be best to get bids for the entire lot from several dealers. Otherwise, you are going to spend a lot of time researching each knife and wondering what to charge. If you auction them on line one at a time, you will have an extra job for a while.

Best of luck.

I agree with the above poster! Get a dealer to take them off your hands for a reasonable price if you really want to just unload all of them. It will be quite a headache to research, list, sell, and ship out ~1000 knives.

You'd be better off asking in the Traditional sub forum.
Sorry to hear about your father-in-law, hope the family is doing well. It's always a journey to endure.

One thing to be aware of at Blade Forums is that you need a paying membership to sell knives here. Not real expensive, but you still need it.

I would organize the collection by brand first. At a glance, some brands are more valuable than others. Many old Case knives are valuable. There are lots of limited edition knives, so it may or may not make any difference. Look at the handle materials and if you have ivory or mamoth ivory, these will be much more valuable at least until the ban goes into effect here in the US.

There is a traditional type knife show coming up in Dalton GA at their convention center (west side of I-75) on March 13 and 14th. There are likely people there that would buy the entire collection if that kind of sale is what you might be looking for versus one or two at a time. But of course, you should have some knowledge going into this.

Thank you for the condolences, my FIL died 8 years ago. The kids have ignored them as long as possible, but can't wait any longer.

They did consider selling to a dealer, but thought they could get more this way. Once they realized that this was literally going to be another job, they offered me the "job". I and they know that some knives may be sold for less than they are worth. That will have to be someone else's blessing and we hope they appreciate it. I am doing the best I can and the family is fine with that....that and the fact that no one else is willing to take it on. ;)

I may end up going to a dealer at some point depending on my sanity/frustration level. Right now, all I have been doing is logging them into a spreadsheet. At least if we do go to a dealer, I know for certain what I am handing over. Before now, it would just be big boxes with who knows what. I am fortunate in that I have receipts for almost all of them, so I know what was paid for them. Most are made and were purchased between 2002 and 2005.

I am actually enjoying learning about these knives and the folks that appreciate them. So, if you are looking for something in particular, let me know and I can search my spreadsheet. I did go ahead and purchase a membership as this forum was advised highly by a reputable knife collector.

Thanks for the input and advice. I'm always open to both.

I will post the label question in the forum that was recommended.

I would unload the newer stuff (<10-15 years old) at about $0.50 on the dollar on the common brands after a little investigation. Since you have a lot of sales receipts, you at least know what was paid and that is very useful information. If there are things like Great Eastern Cutlery, Shatt & Morgan, or Canal Street Cutlery, I would separate those out for further investigation. But most of the Case knives are just knives, fairly good slip joints, but still just knives.
