another newbie question about grinders

I have profiled a few blades with a bench grinder, i was wandering how hard or easy it is to do stock removal with a 1 x 42 belt grinder? what grit belt? or do most use this as a finishing tool? I usually draw a design on the metal, drill holes around it and then grind off what is left.

i know that my first knife was done on a 1x42 and a 4x36 belt sanders and it didnt turn out tooo bad

i know that quite a few of us have started out on small wood working machines
