OK, I don't know if this idea has been posted before, but to keep my knives from to much excessive damage and wear unless its an emergency, the one tool I take with me if weight allows is a small "wrecking bar"/crow bar/pry bar. It does the prying of big and little things and lets my knives do knifey things. One usually goes with me on most trips, lots of rocks around, and some times a small mattock. They usually stay in the main camp and they end up doing a lot of jobs. Using the right tool for the job is the idea, but well many times one has to improvise.

Dude - around here, they're as old as time. Many brothers carry them one way or the other. Simply do a search and you'll find yourself in prybar heaven.

Thanks! I always try and bring one a long, some weight natzi would go OCD saying its dead weight and drop it even when I wasn't with that light as possible forced marching group. Some times I get the funniest looks when they see my Mattock. People forget they are one of the most ancient of tools!

Pry bars are big here on BF, especially the small ones. I can see carrying one car camping, but anything else, I wouldn't. The truth is that I often have all kinds of tools car camping. Most don't get used, but if I have the room, I bring them.
