Another Noobie-ish question. What's up with the hole in the guard?

So, what's up with the hole in the guard?
I've seen that you can put on a landyard D guard,
put on a Holy tearer, but what is the original purpose for this hole?
I remember someone once told me that you could put a little lock on the Basics to lock the sheath on. Was that one of the original uses?
I'm also going to guess it might be to allow paratroopers to take their Busses with them on jumps, maybe? (must be doubly secured).
Okay, I'm out of guesses, what the truth.
thanks.

The hole is a Busse trademark. I believe it first appeared on the Steel Heart. It was used for the screw that held the Holy Tearer D guard. There should be pics at badmojo.tv.

Zactly. The talons were for installation of the D-guard. They carried thru later models, and are now a registered trademark for Busse.

Were there ever other D-guards available?
or was it just for the holy tearer.
Just wondering.
thanks.

Pretty good guesses, my friend. You've answered your own question. I don't think there were ever any other intended purposes for the talon hole other than the ones you just listed. The only thing I could add to that is that Jerry mentioned one time that it could be used to lash the knife to a pole or long limb as a field expedient spear but he never indicated that that was its primary purpose. Some guys braid paracord between the talon hole and the pommel hole like a D-guard, so that they have a long length of paracord available for emergencies such as lashing together a shelter. Basically it's for whatever you want; Jerry doesn't care. I promise.
