So I have been away from slip joints for awhile and would like to get a nice pocket knife to carry. Have a bunch of older USA Schrades, a couple of Case and some odds and ends. I have seen a few that caught my eye, one being a Tidioute Furtaker eggs and hot sauce. The other is a Tidioute bullet jack and the last is a Queen gunstock. Does anyone have any recommendations on these knives, or any thoughts of other knives to check out?

Also I noticed while searching that I found Northfield/Tidioute/GEC all under one bonnet. Are these just different knives made by GEC? I have really been out of the loop too long.

Great Eastern is sub-divided into Northfield, (more elaborate finishes) Tidioute (plainer) and GEC Acorn shield (stainless).

In my wholly biased view, most knives from GEC are seriously worth owning&using.

You will sure find lots of great suggestions here...but since it already caught your eye, why don't you get a Bullet End Jack? After all, it's directly derived from 2011 Bladeforums' knife, so it might be a good way to step again into traditionals :)

Queen & GEC both make great knives in a variety of useful pattern. In my experience GECs have better build quality. Less gaps, no wobbly blades, and they come reasonably sharp. They're still hit or miss on sending out sharp knives, but they're getting better.

Check out the GEC Website for a full description of the three brands and much more, it gets better all the time.

It sounds like you like a substantial sized knife to carry. I am liking the 2011 Forum knife (Easy open Bullet Jack) more and more. They are 3 5/8"closed and not chunky, but not slim either. It is splitting time with a smaller knife, the #33 Conductor.

The bottom line is on average no one comes close to GEC (IMHO) for current production traditional style slipjoints.

Thanks to everyone that replied and thanks for the explanation about all the different brands. I like a good carbon blade so that might limit me but I believe one of these offerings were in D2 which I like as well. I know the last 2 Case purchases I made were stainless and I wasn't too fond of the edges or retention but maybe I just got a few clunkers.

I thought I had it narrowed down but I looked on the site FLymon mentioned and now I have about 5 more I like haha. I don't really like a knife with a lot of blades. Just need 2 good ones. Love the cigar shape a lot and really like the gunstock. I have a queen now and although it is a larger blade it seems to have more wobble than I like to see in a knife. I like a good tight knife with an authoritative snap. Going back to looking.

Sounds like GEC is right up your alley. I highly recommend either the #56 or #85 patterns. They both feel great in the hand and are small enough to comfortably carry in the pocket. I've been impressed with the 1095 they use in the Northfield and Tidioute knives. I don't have any personal experience with the 440C in the GEC branded line, but it gets good reviews here and is definitely a step up from Case's Trusharp.

Hey thanks Danny. Yeah the Trusharp was what I had in the Case offerings and I was pretty unimpressed by it. I do have a little Case Amber Jack in CV that is a great little blade. It has a nice patina on it and takes a good edge. I will check out the 56 and 85 and see what they look like.

I was digging around last night in the knife drawer and found a few slips that I forgot I had. Guess when you don't use a knife it slips off your radar. Have a Bulldog 25 anniversary congress, a couple of Bokers, an Owl brand and a buffalo handled Weidmannsheil.

These were knives that I got way back when I first started the knife craze. A couple of them are the congress pattern which in retrospect isn't my cup of tea so they will probably just stay in the box.

This go round I am looking for a good user. It will get carried everyday in addition to a fixed blade or large folder.

You're unlikely to encounter blade wobble from a GEC, very few if any gaps too.

No D2 offerings, but their stainless IS quality gear. 73 and the bigger 23 are very desirable single-blades, lockback and liner lock variants too.

I thought I was dead set on that eggs and hot sauce furtaker but I just keep going back looking at the bullet jack in ebony and or horn. Such a nice classy look to those black and silver knives. Anyone have any comments on the durability of the horn? I always thought it tended to be delicate. I would hate to bounce one off the floor and end up with a cracked jack.

Well the knife came today and it sure is a beauty. It wasn't as hard to open and close as I had heard that GEC tends to be but it has a nice solid snap. Knife overall just seems about perfect. I wish that the color of the bone on the back matched the exact same coloring as the front but no complaints here. It is extremely sharp and is a little bigger and heavier than I expected it would be but for me that's a good thing.

Fit and finish on it is just outstanding. I don't think I could have made a better choice. On with the pics!

Beautiful knife. I have a tidioute toothpick that I really like but it does have side to side play

No play on this one. It is pretty tight. This is my 1st GEC so I did not know if there were half stops or not. Glad there are. I am horrible about nipping myself on the finger closing the blades and as sharp as this one is, it would take quite a bite.
