I would venture to say that the fine line between patriotism and jingoism has been crossed by many in recent years. Sad to see so many people caught up in the wave.

I found this (paraphrased) quote on the web "Patriotism shades in to jingoism when we cease to question the actions of our country, when our country is no longer viewed as tring to do things that are right, but that things are right because our country does them".

And if you feel the urge to call me unpatriotic, take a deep breath, and try to come up with reasoned arguments to support your position instead of name-calling.

Oh, to keep this on topic, does anyone know what kind of stainless steel opinel uses (my search keeps dying)? Also, anybody have the Opinel 13 with the 10.75" handle? How long is the blade?

There is just some sort of basic disconnect between a company selling knives made in France and then insulting the French who made those knives. And what are they suggesting about those of us who buy the knives ... (from someone else) ... ?

enkidu, je ne parle pas francais, but maybe you can find the steel info on le site officiel.

It's wonderful how this bigoted blind so-called American patriot bashes a French company, while profiting from sales of a French product. But of course, the company is French, therefore it *must* oppose U.S. policy, it *must* have provided arms to Iraq, and it *must* support terrorism, right?

Not to mention, the author doesn't even bother to single out specific aspects of the country to bash, choosing rather to slag the entire country on general principle. Because everything connected with France must be evil, because Shrubya said so, because Shrubya is God's right-hand man, right?

Would someone please deign to reconstitute the author's single shriveled brain cell with saliva? Darwin willing, perhaps the author will then regain the ability to move just enough to off himself sparing the rest of America the pain of perpetuated stupidity in the future.

Back on topic :p , is that the entire Opinel line-up? It looks pretty complete. Also, if someone EDCs an Opinel, what niche does it occupy in your EDC rotation?

I have two Opinel No7's, one carbon steel and one stainless. Great knives, although they come dull you can sharpen them up to "scary" very easily.
If you hate France that much don't buy one. It's your loss.

As long as we're bashing mindless bashing, would you mind easing up on My President? I don't recall him consigning the French nation to the Deepest Pits of Heck. (Well, maybe Don Rumsfeld did :D ) Actually, Dubya seems to have beat on the Germans more than on the French. He just ignored the French :)

That joke about filling up the wall around the country with water isn't new, though. I first heard it about Afghanistan when the Taliban was still around ... :p

Well, there's always the new-old,

"Is it true that French soldiers have white flags sown on their backs? :D"

But that one's been around a while, and applied to many other countries.

Just for fun, read the thread again. It's the guy who's selling the knives who hates the French.

Touchy, touchy!

One thing I haven't caught.
If that guy hates everything French so much, why on earth would he go on selling Opinels?

I thought it was rather humorous. :D

But, disliking France (as a government or their way of rule) typically isn't associated with disliking everything that's produced or imported/exported from France. If you know what I mean.

If not. . .there are plenty of people that dislike the US. But, they purchase products made in the US. ;)

That might be one of the strangest things I've seen this year. What next - a Mercedes-Benz dealership with a large "Germany Sucks!" banner across the showroom window?

(I wonder how this addendum has affected his sale of Opinel knives?)

Really strange.

the French have always been the French, and there's nothing that's going to change that (I mean their attitude). i'm sick of the French bashing, personally. Just another opportunity for the American ego. Just because they don't agree with Bush (who isn't the smartest man alive) doesn't mean they're bad people. The French bashing is over, done, old news, the jokes dead, get on with it!!!

People inclined not to like France will feel more inclined to buy from that site, if they are engaged in the paradox of enjoying French knives while not particularly enjoying the French themselves.

People inclined to like France will not feel inclined to buy from the site.

The seller ends up, thefore, doing business with those who are in agreement with his or her political views, while not doing business with those who oppose them.

Everybody wins. It's the free market.

That guy doesn't like France as a whole, but still wants to make money by selling French products?

That Mercedes analogy was spot on, cockroachfarm!

I've carried a #8 as part of my rotation. It's a great light duty slicer. A feather in the pocket, cuts like a razor, wont get you in trouble at the office and wont set you back as much as a good sandwich or half a tank of gas. What's not to like? It's made in France? I'm pretty sure the guys who assemble these things are not the same guys who make French policy.

Opinel #7 resides permanently in the right front pocket to keep my Benchmades and Spydercos company.:) Incidentally, the France bashing/boycott of French products has only served to drive down the price of my favourite goodies. Today I bought a bottle of my favourite Merlot for around $25 and a case of Perrier for $11. Too bad German beer hasn't gotten any cheaper.
