Another option?

Hi all. First off I would like to say I hugely enjoy this forum, and as a new guy here, I would like to compliment the kindness I have seen this far.

My limited budget, well, limits me from grabbing a knife I have learned to love seeing, the northwoods Indian River Jack.

Is there a less expensive option out there with the blade and case shape of the IRJ?

Thanks!

My Scout rode with me yesterday, and it's a great knife. I too considered the IRJ, but chose the Scout in large part because of its price. The steel tradeoff is fine by me, and to boot I love the look and feel of the ebony.

There is another vendor who has a few of the S&M 99s in jigged bone as well, same 420HC steel, if you prefer that over the ebony.

Thanks for the suggestion, looks like a great option. Any others that you guys can think of?

That is the exact same knife, made by the same maker, but in a lower cost steel. Not sure what you are wanting instead. Is it still a cost issue? What is your budget?

Yeah, just seeing if there is a less expensive option still. It is a great looking knife though that is closer to what I'd like to spend but still high for my situation. I am a grad student on a tight budget. Also, my one year old son just had surgery today which is going to put me under. I was hoping to buy something worthy of passing on to him in a few years that is attainable now.

Again, thanks for all the help!

The schatt 99 was made expressly for your purpose though you could go even cheaper with a Vic Alox Solo

Vic Alox solo or if you want some extra tools an alox electrician

To be honest, my father handed off two victorinox saks to me dated around the 1970's and I cherish them so. If it was an opinel I would enjoy it all the same. An Alox Victorinox would be a nice piece to have especially once the coating has worn off a bit on the coloured red or black versions. However, I feel like the Schatt 99 would carry more character as a heirloom knife to pass on with the refined characteristics. You could hunt on the exchange for one for a lower price if they come up.

I have 2 IRJ's but did not know about the S&M 99. What a fine knife ! Both ebony and jigged bone are very traditional and both age well. I would say the 99 is every bit an "heirloom knife" as the Indian River Jack.
Looks like not many of the 99's were made so better act soon. You would be annoyed with yourself if they are all gone by the time you decide. Sometimes "he who hesitates is lost".

I wouldn't say the scales are flat on the IRJ, they're slightly rounded over through the middle and more so tapering toward the liners/spring. Here's a decent profile shot. As said above...the 99 Scout is the exact same knife from the same maker (Queen) only with a more cost effective steel, thus making it cheaper.

I will 2nd the Alox. Either the Solo, Pioneer or the Electrician. If they look too modern, save a little longer and get the 99 or even an IRJ on the exchange.
