another overnighter with bearthedog last week...my h&b forge shawnee tomahawk...started raining the day before the trip so everything was soaked as can be. we chopped and split a lot of wood and this 'hawk continues to impress me...so much so i didn't even miss using a belt knife.

bcusa 10'x10' tarp. i brought a closed cell foam pad for my hammock but it dropped to the low 40's and i got really chilled (even though i had a down jacket, beanie and a kifaru woobie at that) so i ended up sleeping on the ground...felt more like december than june!

bcusa mest to the rescue! really glad i brought it...it let us keep the fire to a reasonable size and not risk dying out from the constant rain.

iron chef reuben on the grill while i got started on the booze - no more maker's mark...this time it was bulleit rye.

this was so good i just had to take a picture of it - no need to add spam, bacon or anything to add extra flavor. in fact, i was half way finished when reuben reminded me of my habanero flakes and that just kicked it up a notch.

Rain can’t keep us down!

The creeks were flowing!

Once the shelters were up it was time to work on fire…

Jay and his H&B Forge Shawnee (his neck knife)

My Frontier Hawk

All fire prep was done with the hawks. Every piece of wood needed to be split, chopped and the kindling needed to be made. We had to make toothpick, pencil and finger thick pieces. Birch bark was used for tinder.

Done with hawk

Snack break

Tarp stakes, roasting sticks and a grill

Teepee

Lunch was spam, broccoli cheese rice and ham.

Jay doesn’t like to run out of water…

Dinner time

Peppers, Italian sausage, and rice.

Overnight lows dipped into the 40’s

I was bone dry and slept like a baby lamb, all warm and cozy.

Breakfast and left overs

Had to use these gators

Rain continued, we were happy!

Need help with these plants…what are they?

Thanks!

Nice! I like the tomahawk. Do you think the 19" handle on that H&B is sufficient enough or do you ever find yourself needing/wanting more? I'm just now starting to get in to axes. In fact, a Wetterlings Bushman should be arriving in the mail sometime next week. Not much larger than your Shawnee. My first "nice" axe.

Oh, and Bulleit is some fine whiskey my friend!

Looks like Wild Rose, the second one is definitely Japanese Knot Weed.

mmm mmm bulleit...i was a long time maker's mark drinker but only recently discovered bulleit based on a recommendation from my local bar tender...needless to say it's my new favorite.

for me everything about the h&b shawnee is perfect - light enough that i want to take it everywhere and powerful enough for 99% of my chopping needs.

check out this thread awhile back comparing it to my gb small forest axe: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1242364-another-day-hike-tomahawk-vs-axe. after this trip i don't like my hatchet anymore and will be selling off a few of my gb axes except for the scandinavian forest axe for when i want to chop down a dead standing tree or something (which i rarely do).

Awesome post as usual Jay! Man, lunch looks great!

If you keep hanging out with Reuben and he's going to corrupt you...he'll have you wandering the globe looking through lenses lol

thanks, brian! i'm not worried about the globe trekking part more than the weight gain - i gain 10 lbs on every overnighter with him!

Lol, yeah he can eat, but because he's never still . Oh, and #1 looks like Black Raspberries to me.
