Kevin,

Mike inferred elsewhere that these recurrent ping attacks are being generated by an old adversary. Tonight again the General Forum has been interdicted so I can't access it.

Is there anything we can do to help stop this crap? Can we, as forumites, bitch to his ISP? Anything

What is his ISP? I happen to live in the same area he does and I know most of the local system administrators ... if not directly then through friends....

Judging from our access logs, it's looking like he's using a program similar to "Back Orfice" to direct other computers to hit us. I've already contacted a few of the ISP's in question and they've been more than willing to work with me on this, so we'll see what's going on. Anyhow, I've been logging everything, every time it happens, so we do have recourse....

Cougar, I'll talk to you via email about this...

Well, I'm glad you guys are at least trying to take some action. This is really annoying

Well, whomever is responsible, you can rest assured that he didn't get enough affection as a child, he's obviously "acting out" to get attention. Too bad, I guess it takes ALL kinds though. Karma is a funny thing though, it does take it's pound of flesh eventually.

Is there anything we can do to stop these attacks?

I was able to post in spite of the attacks (hehehe). If you try to post during an attack I suggest you click the [Submit Reply] button only once. If you click more than once because of an error message there will be multiple posts. I can post but I can't surf the GF

If this individual can be located, and he (or she) is anywhere near my location...I volunteer to go visit and provide "counseling".

Hey Spark and Mike, there are some tampering with communications charges you can file. Also civil charges... Call the Feds and start howling. Or give me a shout and I will point you in the right direction.

Spark,

I have been a professional software developer for over 10 years. When I first heard of the Cult of the Dead Cow's "Back Orifice", I got a copy to check out what it does. Needless to say, I was shocked. This reminds me of a quote from a virus SW developer back in the late eighties: "...the work of impotent adolescents who are incapable of normal, social interaction." This is an insult to my profession.

I urge you, don't stop the pursuit until the responsible individual is either out of reach or in jail.

Thanks,
Ray

Geez, I didn't quite realize how important the forums were to me until now! I was practically spazing out! I mean this is the 1 year anniversary...

Spark - one thing you might want to consider doing is having a security consultant review your router and firewall configuration. Also, make sure that you have all of the latest patches from the firewall vendor.

Well, actually, I have a better idea: Give me the offender's address. I just got a new HI khukuri. I could go to his place and test it on his head. Then, I could post the results along with a scan of the "trophy."

We are working on a solution. Unfortunately I can not fight fire with fire in this case. I did call the individual in question last night. He simply hung up when he new who I was.

I have an idea that I am working on with Spark.

Since killing the offender would be illegal, how about civil action? Would it be feasible to take up a collection to hire a lawyer and sue him out of existence. Not many individuals have the resources to have an attorney on retainer, and I am sure there is more than a few attorneys that attend the forums that could help with this situation.

I would also recommend call the FCC imeadiately, and begin lodging complaints. Have them start a file on this guy, then post the FCC number so we can all log complaints against him. If only one or two people complain nothing will be done, but if 3,000+ people call to complain action will be taken.

Now there's an idea!
while we're at it, how about a name and maybe a state? City would be even better.
