Another Poljot watch question

(I guess none of us ever become "ex-watchcollectors"!)

After reading the other Poljot thread, I ordered a Vostok "Amphibia" - just to see what kind of a watch you get for $45.00!

Received it a few days ago. Not bad at all! Except the luminescence(?)! It's just plain awful. I've seen trout swimming through the dumped water at a nuclear power plant that glowed longer than this watch!

I have just checked out some of the Poljot watches available and I am quite interested in one of the titanium models. Before I order it, I have a couple of questions:

1. Is the case made from SOLID titanium?

2. I am particularly interested in the Chrono-SS-20, #pc21. The
description states that the case is engraved: "Made from Soviet Spaceship". Can anyone explain what that means? (They're not seriously trying to tell me that the watch case is made from titanium salvaged from a discarded Soviet space craft?) I'm also a space artifact collector and I find that claim hard to believe!

Anyone have any info on that? (Frank at www.russiansouvenirs.com didn't know.)

Maybe from a disassembled rocket? If it's from a nuclear warhead, it may glow better than those trout! :p

No kidding!

I have a friend who runs a space collectibles website in Europe. Maybe he knows something about these watches. Is it possible that titanium could be "salvaged" from a space craft (or whatever) and used to make a watch case? Would it be worth the effort? These watches only cost about $250.00

Quite a few years ago, I purchased most of the remaining stock of "Crash" watches from a friend here in Canada. They were invented by a German millionaire trash dealer who came up with a process by which an empty aluminum beer or soda can could be pressed into the shape of a watch case! Pretty neat idea, but the retail price of the "Crash" watches couldn't compete with Swatch.

I gave most of those watches away, but I think I still have two or three somewhere.

Maybe the Poljot "Made from a Space Craft" case is a similar concept?

This keeps tickling something in the back of my mind ... I remember vaguely an ad in the Sovietski Collection catalog for something like that, but I can't remember the story they used.

I think it was from rockets rather than space ships like a shuttle or capsule.

I would think it would be easier to melt down titanium scrap and retool it than to start from ore.

If titanium from an old rocket could be melted down and then used in the making of a watch case - hey, that would be neat!

(I'll track this down....)

I'm not entirely sure about the origins of this titamium, but it is my understanding that it was in some way obtained from retired missiles.

I remember a few years ago Chase-Durer was selling a watch which had a portion of the case made out a B-52 bomber part. It was called the "Bomber Command" and was comparable in price to similar watches, so similar things have been done before in the industry.

Fishbulb, don't those Chase-Durer advertisements just make you cringe when you read them? I don't know whether to bust out laughing or feel bad for their juvenile advertising department! :D

I operated/owned an advertising agency for 28 years. I'd love to hear the reasoning behind your statements. (I agree with them. But, I'd also like to know why you feel that way.):)
