Another question about firewalls and anti-virus software

I'm running the following key items on my laptop:
  • Operating systems = Windows XP
  • Browser = Mozilla Firefox
  • Email = MS Outlook
I've very recently been pimped by Symantec/Norton and am now in need of both an anti-virus software and a firewall... must work with both Outlook and Firefox. Free would be great, inexpensive is ok... yearly subscription fees not so good.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance!!!!

I had heard good things about Zone Alarm in the past.

People I respect say to avoid Outlook and use the Mozilla e-mail program instead.
I think Mozilla will import Outlook address books.

I tried using Thunderbird email and I found it very tricky to use. It also had fewer available utilities than Outlook. I ditched it after a month. It did look nice though.

after 3 years of using norton, I switched to mcafee and couldnt be happier

I highly recommend both their av and firewall

avg misses too many trojans and so does the free version of zone alarm

NOD32 is the best Antivirus I've used, second would be Kaspersky. Both have superb detection rates and are generally lighter on resources than Norton or Mcafee.

I have been using AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall on all of my PCs for years no with no problems. It was Sygate that symantec bought up, and has since stopped offering a free version of the firewall. That is too bad as I thought it was a very good product, light, very configurable, and works well.

I have since moved over to Zone Alarm on new installs, and have no major complaints other than not really liking the interface much. I would highly recommend AVG and Zone ALarm free to everyone, and generally recommend against Norton or McAffee as they use way to many resources and strong arm you into paying every year for updates.

Thank you all for the replies and the advice! Muchly appreciated.

An additional question... does anyone know if the anti-spam software integrates with Outlook similarly to Symantec's software? NAV/NIS creates an "Anti-Spam" toolbar in Outlook that makes it ridiculously easy to monitor which incoming emails have been sent to "spam *ell" just in case some non-spam ones have been accidently binned incorrectly.

Thanks again! You guys are the best! :D

Just another story here. I bought a new laptop a few months ago, and would have problems with it starting up. Every other time I started it up, I would get an error message that said something like, "Norton has detected an internal error. Please uninstall Norton and reinstall". This sounded like a lot of trouble to me; trouble that I shouldn't even have to be bothered with on a brand new laptop.

Finally, after my 3 month free trial of Norton Internet Security expired, I removed all traces of Norton from my computer and installed the Professional version of AVG. Gee, what a coincidence; I've not had a single problem since. Me likey AVG. :)

Everyone should save this link in thier "favorites".
Totally free and no spyware/malware etc and will remove a lot that big name programs such as Symantec wont even find.

I had a horrid trojan that symantec couldnt touch , this Ewido worked like a charm , run it once a week and you'll be right as rain.

Been there, done that, got it on my computers. You're right; ewido finds stuff that other programs miss. I have Mr. Collucci to thank for telling me about it.

Whatever program you choose in the end, get rid of Norton ASAP! it's the ultimate piece of crap...

I use ZA and Kaspersky, can't beat that combo.
