This is for those of you who have, or are planning on applying for, a CCW permit. What are the essentials that you carry, besides a gun of course. I can think of some, but would like to hear from those of you with more experience. Please elaborate, and explain your choices. I`d also like to know your firearm of choice, and why. The ones I can think of are:

Good holster
Extra magazine or speedloader
Cell phone

M&P Shield mostly. Sometimes my M&P Compact. The compact has a larger magazine. I don't carry an extra mag usually. I carry inside the waistband and always have a cell phone, flashlight, Swiss Army knife, wallet, and another folding knife on me. Always, even at work. I lock the gun in a safe in my car when I can't carry it inside some places.

I carry these (I have a Glock also) because I've put hundreds and hundreds of rounds down range with them and they are tough, reliable weapons I'd trust, if, heaven help me, I have to use them.

have you ever been it the USA arm forces?? if so then you do not need a safety course. just show them your DD214. that should save you some money.

I carry an extra mag or two in my front pocket and the pistol in an IWB thin leather holster. When the weather allows for a jacket, I prefer a Colt Commander style/size pistol [sold my last one but plan on picking up a Sig 1911 Compact stainless in the Fall]. Right now with temps over a hundred, I can't hide a gun that large so I carry my Interarms Walther PPK stainless stoked with Hornady Critical Defense rounds.

During work I have to wear dress pants and have my shirt tucked in so I carry a S&W 442 hammer less .38 special in an Uncle Mikes pocket holster. It allows for a quick easy draw and no snags from the pocket. I doubt I will ever carry a speed loader for my 442, just too big and bulky for my pockets with everything else I carry. When I'm off work and I can untuck my shirt, I've been carrying my Walther PPK .380 in an iwb holster. Obviously the .380 is not the most powerful round but the firearm fits my hand like a glove and points very naturally for me. It also has the long double action trigger pull on the first round with nice crisp short single action trigger pulls for follow up shots. I'm a huge fan of SA/DA firearms as well as all metal frames. I've been looking for holsters with slots for backup mags but haven't got around to buying one yet. Other than that I carry situational awareness with me and the desire to stay away from trouble. Last thing I want to do is to pull my firearm unless it's unavoidable. Good luck John, being an Illinois neighbor over here in Missouri I'm relieved for you guys that you finally get the chance to protect your selves:thumbup:

I am not like most but I work in a very crime ridden area. So I carry a bunch of stuff.

Strong side 3-4 o'clock glock 19
Left hand pocket kahr pm9
2 folders in knife pockets
Led flash light. As bright as possible but small.
Weak side extra mag at the 9-10.
And often a package of celox in my cargo pocket.

Glock 23 .40sw in fobus paddle holster, or Kimber Ultra RCPII .45acp in a galco owb holster under a drapey shirt.

No extra mags for normal carry.

Pocket knife and my cell phone and I am good to go.

best

where are you people working you need to carry guns at please?? I went to work at Orlando Florida 33rd street jail. boy was that tuff. the guards checked our tool pouches and wrote a list of what we had. when we walked back through the check out they looked for the list and you better have all of your tools with you.

I've gotten out of the habit of carrying on my person as I don't travel very much. I work fed law enforcement but with limited jurisdiction so I'm not "on-duty" 24/7 like the FBI or DEA or something. When I carried my Beretta and when I carry my Sig I've usually got two mags and a set of handcuffs and a flashlight on the opposite hip. I guess if my belt buckle is at 12 o'clock my flashlight is at 3:30, mags at 4, cuffs at 5, gun at 8. Almost always have a Buck 110 and a leatherman tool in the mix also. These days always have the cell too. Agency rules is that if you start something you better be able to finish it - detain the bad guy for the local authorities, so gotta have the cuffs.

When I carry my Taurus 605 I used to carry speed strips in the opposite cargo pocket with the cuffs. Lots of weight to swing around and I've started carrying my crud in one of the TAC-SAC (?) bags you get from County Comm - the ones that originally carried a satellite communications antennae or something to that effect. Works good unless the world ends as you know it beyond reach of your truck.

I work in the city of St.Louis and crime around here is starting to get a bit out of control, especially around the area I work. Throw is the fact that I deal with substantial amounts of cash and there is concern for my safety and that of my fellow employees. Imo though, regardless of were you work or live there is no harm in being prepared. I see no reason not to carry at all times unless I lawfully(courthouses) or physically cannot(swimming or running). I hate to sound cliche but I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

no problem. I was just asking. I use to work construction and I had way too many people riding in my truck to have a gun in there.

For me getting my CCW was more of a moral decision than deciding which weapon to carry and how to carry it. I still do not carry around town every day but do always carry in the woods. When I carry in town it is either my Glock 36 or Sig 290RS. I carry each in a Crossfire Armadillo holster. I chose the Glock because of the caliber/size ratio. It points well for me and I can shoot it instinct style with confidence. The Sig is for times when I want something slightly more concealable. What I carry in the woods varies with the time of year and location. If it is a smaller frame I carry in a pocket holster and the larger ones ride in my woods-bumming bag.

I wasn't trying to be snarky and hope it didn't come across that way. I was just trying to answer your questions and give you some insight to my mindset and decision to carry, all the best bro:thumbup:

Thanks for all the replies. I probably won`t be getting a CCW permit, but it`s interesting to see your choices.

I've had my CC permit for several years now, but haven't carried regularly till lately. It's either a G19 IWB Blade-tech holster or Springfield XDS 45 IWB Old Faithful holster, extra 7 rnd mag with the XDS. Lately I've added a flashlight, Olight S10 Baton clipped to a left side pocket. Always have keys, wallet, cell phone, and a knife.
