If all goes as planned, I will be taking a new Aire prototype inflatable kayak down Hell's Canyon on the Snake River starting on the 9th. I never understood the whole reason why you would want to restrict your survival kit size to an altoids tin... until now. Last trip (gotta dig for the thread but I posted a link to the pics) I stuck some essential items (RC5, water, some granola bars, sunscreen and epipen) in a small drybag and carbinered it to the kayak as a safety net, last minute idea. This time I think it would be smart to build two survival kits-one that can fit in my life jacket and one that can fit in my small drybag to bring on the IK. I will have my entire pack, cold weather gear, clothes, tools etc in a big drybag on another raft, but I want something I can fit on the kayak for peace of mind. I'll keep you updated as I put it together.

As a kayaker (but NOT white-water) I have also wondered where the best place would be to keep a survival kit. I guess on your body - in PFD pocket or something - is the only way to guarantee you have it if you get separated from your kayak (but my PFD doesn't have a usable pocket).

I like your idea of two kits, a small critical-needs one that is just small enough to make sure you can fit it into your pocket, and one that has more things that will certainly make you less miserable in event of misfortune, attached to the kayak or fastened somewhere you won't lose it. But the one in my pocket ought to be water-proofed to keep from damaging bandaids etc if I go in the drink.
