A friend has a RAT3 and a RAT7 D2 that he wants to sell for a good price, $125 for both NIB. Since they are both D2 I'm a little hesitant to purchase due to the type use they will be used in (general outdoor use & chopping). I really like the look and feel of both knives, but if I might have a problem with the steel I'll pass and continue to use my Beckers. Any hands-on info would be appreciated.

That's not an a-typical price for either of them by themselves. D2 isn't my first choice for a big knife of that type but at that price I'd buy 'em! The little RAT-3 should make a great utility and as long as you don't beat on the big one too hard it should do fine.

I have used many custom D2 blades, and I doubt Ontario would claim a better heat treat than the customs I have handled. D2 is a great steel for retaining a crisp edge in low impact work, it however has the exact opposite set of properties which are optimal for a seven inch chopping knife, and it is more expensive. For the small blade though D2 is a very nice steel assuming you want more of a cutting blade than a utility tool.

Again, not my ideal, but at that price point...

Or maybe see if he'll sell you just the RAT-3 for half. :D

I just got my RAT-3 and love it. I would at least get that knife. I am not sure about the other one. Like Cliff said, as long as you use it as a slicer instead of a chopper you will be fine.

I've got a RAT3 as well and love it. If you are uncertain about the RAT-7 in D2, you could always sell it and still probably come out better on the RAT3 than the ~$70 it's available at right now.
