Smoking that is...aside from the ones I already knew.

It's only been six days since I've been off the smokes and on the patch, but what a difference it has made in the shop! I find myself more focused and energetic and making the most of my time in there. No more 5 or 10 minute smoke breaks to get me distracted. My current project is about 4 hours ahead of schedule, which may not seem like a lot, but when I only get 4 hours a week max shop time, it's a week's time! I never really knew how much time it took from me until just today. I'm really hoping to kick it for good this time. If anyone has any tips or tricks they had success with, please feel free to share! -Matt-

Grease-Man,

That's great, quiting, awesome. I've been almost a non-smoker for the last 2 month. One or 2 a day at work, I'm smoking OP's (Other People's) now, so I've cut way down :D

Good Luck to you on your quiting adventure, or is that venture,:jerkit: arn't they an old surf band  hhmmmm. Well not to mention the money you save.

Larry,I wish I could cut that far down and stay that way, but with me, it's all or nothing. Good luck on your almost not smoking! ;) -Matt-

When you get an urge for one, and it will happen, start taking long deep breaths of air. concentrate on the breath and expanding your chest as much as possible. Exhale slowly and completely....you will concentrate on the breathing which will break your concentration on wanting a cigarette. I quit almost 20 years ago and went through a program to do ....that breathing tip was probably one of the most helpful...
Good Luck!

congrads on trying to quit guys.. I quit 26 years ago
but I took up chewing, the habit went to that literally, so since off the chew for 20 some odd years I've had no urge to smoke
but still now when I smell skoal I get the hankering for a chew to this day..
good thing not many I'm around chew any longer :)..

Larry, you the man , by not going cold turkey ,
you must like self torture a lot :D

I quit three years ago. I did a few things to help.

1. I used the gum to help with the hard cravings the first couple of weeks.
2. I quit drinking beer and coffee as well because I associated smoking with both of them.
3. I didn't go near a bar for a couple of months.
4. I researched why people fail in their attempts to quit. A lot of people quit for a year and figure they are strong enough to smoke only when they drink etc...most end up smoking full time again.
5. I told EVERYONE I knew that I was quiting. I didn't want to look a candy@$$ to all these people so I used that as motivation.

After a few months I started drinking beer and coffee again and could go into a bar without feeling tempted too much.

Good luck!

Hey those are really good ideas! The breathing thing was suggested by a friend of mine recently and that really does work well. Most of where I frequent is smoke free, like work and home which certainly does help. I'll try cutting out more activities that I associate smoking with...unfortunaltely I still have to drive! Driving anywhere in my truck has got to be the hardest for me right now. I think it's the boredom factor. Thanks for the ideas guys. -Matt-

I'll have to give some of those a try when I decide to quit smoking. I have way too much stress going on right now to even focus on quitting. Mom and I had a Realtor come today to take pics of the front of the house to put on the website and I still have a few more things to do on the inside. Then I'm taking a few days of vacation and going to see a buddy of mine in Carrizo Springs, Texas and do a little hunting and BS'ing. When I get back I will be able to work on a knife again. Also might try quitting smoking in a month or two.

Good idea, quitting. I dropped off a lot when I retired. Amazing how a drop in daily tension makes it easier to forget to smoke.

I didn't need patches or gum or anything, just a lot of time in the woods, getting away from everything. Some of the guys got in the habit of walking around chewing on a toothpick, to have something instead of a cigaret in their mouths. Try that in the truck, at least.

Thanks Esav...I'll try the toothpick thing as a surrogate...but what happens when I get addicted to toothpicks!;)

Just stick to the plain ones, you'll be all right. You'll be in real trouble if you develope an addiction to cocktail toothpicks in different colors or with little cellophane handles.

Of course, you could pick up these Australian Birchwood Chewing Sticks instead. :)

(Who knew toothpicks could be so complicated ??? )

I thought a toothpick was just a toothpick, but now I think they could be a form of snobbery!
All might not be lost though...throw that in a PSK and it would save you the time of having to whittle your own (less than adequate toothpick) in the wilderness after a gourmet meal of stringy jackrabbit. Maybe soak them in lighter fluid and use them for tinder! :D Wrong sub-forum, I know, but a funny thought. -Matt-

I quit in may of this year for 2 big obvious reasons
1.smoking kills you
2. its really expensive
all the extra money per month went into.....a new truck :)

I used patches, regular gum (nicotine gum is gross) and best of all sunflower seeds.
I now found my self enjoying an ocasional cigar but have no desire to smoke ciggaretes, just remind yourself that it is an addiction and must be treated as such.Good luck.

morrow j 98 has a real valid point(s)
temporarily giving up coffee and alcohol are good ideas that were recommended when I stopped smoking....
remember the word "coffee and a cigarette" was one word..
"a drink and a cigarette" seemed also to be one word....

If you can quit all three, cigarettes, coffee and alcohol temporarily, then add back the coffee and the alcohol, getting off the tobacco is easier....but no coffee and no alcohol is only temporary.......
Again,
GOOD LUCK! IT IS WORTH THE TEMPORARY PAIN!!!!!

Toothpicks as a survival item! In a world that sells sliced apple in plastic clampacks, nothing surprises me. :)

Esav, that thought just makes me wanna :barf:, but I guess there has to be a product for the non knife carrying wilderness goers that are afraid to use their teeth to actually bite a friggin' apple! There's a word for those kind of people, but I don't think I can use it here! ;)

Joe, we are of similar mind here. I like an occasional cigar also, but I gotta kick the durn cigs before I go any further. I'm on the patch, and thanks to that and the advice coming in on this thread, I'm actually doing really well so far. My wife just noted tonight that I was less irritable this time than the previous times, so I think I'm on the road to recovery.

John, I'm not a coffee drinker anymore, but I still do drink beer. Coffee and beer are the two best condiments a cigarette ever had, so I have to "un-associate" my associations so to speak! I've been trying to avioid anything that puts a cig in the hand, and so far it's been going quite well.

Thanks again for all of your support guys! -Matt-

I tried the gum and patch and cold turkey!!! couldn't swing it. This new drug they come out with is the bomb though!!! Chantix....I quit for three months an never even thought about a smoke untill me and the lil woman split up. Now I'm back on the wagon, been harder this time around but I'll get er done. The sunflower seeds have been my crutch, but they're almost as addicting!!! I like the flavored kind they don't tear my mouth up as bad, I guess they have less salt? Good Luck, cause man, it feel soooo good to tell everyone that you have finally kicked that nasty ass habit!!!

I just heard about the Chantix the other day...I hope I wont have to explore that option, but it sounds like it works really well. Cold turkey never worked for me. I couldn't do it without some help. I'm still off the smokes and feel great about it, but it'll be a while yet before I'll be able to say I finally quit for good. I've gone back to them as many as 9 months later, but I'm hoping I'm smarter than that and have more willpower now. -Matt-

I've tried the gum before and it didn't help. I think I will try Chantix when I decide to quit. Once I get into welding school it should be easier for me to quit since I won't be able to smoke in school. Glad to see you quitting. Good luck and keep us posted.

The gum is about worthless IMHO. Plus it tastes like :barf:

My problem more than the nicotine itself, was the just the bored habit of doing it. Driving in the truck is much better than it was, now that I've started using Dum-Dum suckers to fill the void. I have found that the bananna flavored suckers taste like :barf: too! :D Thanks for the support, "the Donald"! :p -Matt-
