Another reason to like Emerson - a rant

I'm SO tired of other knife companies acting like boutique shops where they'll come out with new knives that people love and get used to, only to have the company discontinue that very same knife a year later.

I can't tell you how many times I've fallen in love with a particular model from a company to only see it discontinued a year or two later. Then I'm stuck with a collector's item I'm afraid to use!

Sure, I still have one copy each of several of those favorite knives, but I want to be able to depend on a model always being there.

If XYZ company comes out with the "ABC" knife that I really love, I want to know that if I ever break or lose my ABC knife, I'm able to get a new one without having to hunt for one and spend 200% more to get another "collector's item".

Emerson doesn't inflict this stress on me.

If I ever break or lose my Commander or CQC-7, I know I can always order another or, if money is tight, I can find a used one on the forums or Ebay for under $100! And I'm confident that I can continue to obtain a replacement or recommend it to a friend well into the future.

So, yeah, I like Emerson because if I fall in love with a knife, I can still freakin' get another one if I ever lose mine!

Just a rant.

Not a rant. Just an observation of a professional making tools, not ... boutique items. In the same way, he doesn't run around looking for new materials when the G-10 - titanium - 154 works fine.

Not only does this guarantee you continued access to a good old pattern, it simplifies his production and allows him to concentrate on quality, not a learning curve.

A very nice addition to my entry. :)

That's very good to know since I will soon be a first time Emerson owner.

For the prices, I think an upgrade to S30v would be nice. I love my cqc8, but I'd love it even more with better steel. Benchmade/Spyderco makes affordable knives using G10 handles and s30v blades, I think Emerson could do it.

Mong---I think you'll come to realize that 154-CM is a damn good steel. I used to think like you. I'm not sure you would know the difference between 154 and S30V. Ernest found a steel that works and he's sticking with it.

+1. People have been happy with the 154 ss that Emerson has been using for years. Don't fix it if it ain't broke ;).

Exactly. Some of my favorite, and most-used, knives are 154CM. I wouldn't trade it for anything else except if I knew I needed a special steel for a particular use. In other words, for general use I actually prefer 154CM.
