I'm a huge fan of wood handled knives, but for some strange reason I do not have enough wood handled slipjoints. I'm also a pretty big fan of John Lloyd knives, in fact (thanks to Vince) I have more Lloyd knives than any other maker. They look great, work great, and basically are great. Most of mine are his older stuff so there are some minor aesthetic issues, but they don't affect how I use them so I don't mind.
Keeping my eye on the forum I spotted a nice rosewood handled Lloyd knife. Of course I couldn't buy it due to buying a house instead. I've kept an eye out for it since, noting that it changed hands to somebody that really deserved and loved it. I was glad that it was still making appearances around here.
Sad I was, the day it went up for sale again, and I was confused to see it remaining for sale for a while. I emailed the owner, and let him know it was a good price, and because of how much I knew he liked the knife, suggested to him not to let lowballers get it (as I felt they would probably just try and flip it for a profit off of him).
I was amazed to get a return email from the owner (our own Doug Add!!), saying that the knife was mine in the future, when I could afford it. I was shocked, to say the least. I let him know that due to my circumstances it would be a while before I could afford it, and not to wait if he got a better offer. But he assured me that it would be mine when the time came.
Well, last weekend was the time. The rosewood handled shadow pattern arrived (after 2 trips to the post office), and I couldn't be happier. It fits well, is a step up in construction, is a solid user. A great knife all around, and a great secondary knife to a rosewood camp knife I made.
Thank you Doug- it will be with me for a long time, and get used in regular rotation. Your generosity will be remembered for just as long!
